2009 Fantasy Football: All-Goat Team

Posted on 28 January 2010 by Kevin

Every year you start the season, shaking your head, certain that you have “the team to beat” and that nothing can go wrong when you have Tom Brady, Steve Slaton, and Calvin Johnson.

Well, yikes, dear sirs, and my ladies. Just because you spent a high pick or mid-rounder on a player, doesn’t necessarily mean that they panned out for you. However, interestingly enough, despite those players hanging you out to dry, you still hung onto them.

In fact, according to Yahoo! Sports , these players were owned by at least 90 percent of teams in all of the Yahoo! leagues. That’s just sad.

These were the guys that, despite laying egg after egg, we kept holding onto, hoping they’d resemble a former version of themselves.

This is the list that shows those players for their true colors, and also shows every fantasy owner out there that, despite the ownership percentage, these guys should have been on the waiver wire long before the season ended.

Read on to see who took the cake for their respective position in fantasy football in 2009:
Criteria to be named to the All-Goat Roster : Player must have ended the season being owned in 80% of all leagues (Yahoo! Sports).

QB: Carson Palmer – Cincinnati Bengals (Owned in 89 Percent of Leagues)

Thought this was Jay Cutler’s turf? Well, almost. True, Cutler led the league in interceptions thrown, but from a fantasy stand-point, had a sizable lead over Palmer, who was just plain bad during the final weeks of the season.

Palmer finished with barely over 3,000 yards, 21 touchdowns, and 13 picks. He was much more careful than Cuter with the ball, throwing 14 fewer interceptions, but threw for almost 600 fewer yards and six fewer touchdowns.

That, and Palmer was shooting blanks in his final four weeks, throwing just five touchdowns while Cutler threw eight in his final two games (plus no picks).

Honorable Mention: Jay Cutler (81 Percent)

RB: LaDainian Tomlinson – San Diego Chargers (97 Percent)

Sure, Tomlinson stayed relevant down the stretch, but let’s admit it, youwere kicking yourself for not pulling the trigger and selling high on him at midseason.
The 12 touchdowns were nice, but just 63 yards per game was a giant disappointment. LT wasn’t a factor in the passing game, and rushed for over 73 yards just once all season, while failing to crack 100 yards in a game all year.
Considering he was taken in the first round in a large number of drafts (nearly every one), this was beyond a disappointing year for LT.

Honorable Mention: Matt Forte (96 Percent)

WR: Terrell Owens–Buffalo Bills (89 Percent)

Owens is the consensus pick for the wide receiver position. He was hyped up as Buffalo’s savior on offense, yet he failed to crack 100+ receiving yards until Week 11, and only topped 80 yards receiving three times all season.

His 829 yards and five scores were his lowest totals since he played just seven games with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2004, and his lowest total for a season (14+ games) since 1999.

Honorable Mention: Calvin Johnson (96 Percent)

TE: Jeremy Shockey–New Orleans Saints (81 Percent)

Shockey was supposed to jump to a new level of play in the Saints’ high-octane offense after scoring zero touchdowns with them last year in his first season.
While his numbers did rise (three touchdowns), he actually caught two fewer balls, and still recorded less than 600 yards for the second-straight season (both with NO).
He didn’t have a horrible season, but compared to the other studs of this year’s tight end class, Shockey was a bit of a bust.

Honorable Mention: Jason Witten (97 Percent)
Note: While Witten has had a great yardage and reception year, he scored just two touchdowns.

K: Mason Crosby–Green Bay Packers (86 Percent)

Crosby was a solid source of points, as usual, coming out of a high-powered Green Bay offense, but he was also a source of disappointment.

He missed nine field goals and one extra point, and went just 2-7 beyond 50 yards. For a kicker with a big leg, he unexpectedly had a down year.

Honorable Mention: Rob Bironas (82 Percent )

Defense: Pittsburgh Steelers (90 Percent)

Perhaps their name and the image of their Super Bowl defenses kept thedream alive that the famed Steelers defense would step up when we needed them the most.

Near the end of the season, that was about half-way true, but it was fairly clear that, without Troy Polomalu, Pittsburgh wasn’t an elite defense, and was routinely carved up by opposing passing attacks.

The Steelers allowed over 300 points, and recorded just 12 interceptions.

Honorable Mention: None

Fantasy Player Breakdown – Week 15

Posted on 18 December 2009 by Chris

If you’re still alive in your league’s playoffs, then this is the time of week to take a gander at every player on your roster, his match-up this week, as well as his potential.

When fantasy playoffs roll around, it’s best to have the superstars who have the easy match-ups, but are still on teams that have something to play for.

With that said, high profile players from the Jacksonville Jaguars, Houston Texans, Arizona Cardinals, and Baltimore Ravens all make the most sense this week. They have great match-ups, and their elite players are some of the league’s biggest fantasy studs.

For all other analysis for Week 15, read on:

Dallas Cowboys @ New Orleans Saints

QB Tony Romo: Has been on fire and match-up is nicer than people think. ****
RB Marion Barber: Should be able to run all over them, but commitment to run game is lacking. ***
RB Felix Jones: Could be good for some big plays, and the touches should be there. ***
WR Miles Austin: Saints probably can’t hold him in check all day, so play him like normal. ***
WR Roy Williams: Has been weak, but Saints have regressed against the pass lately. **
TE Jason Witten: Saints are solid against tight ends, but he’s been too good to sit. ****

QB Drew Brees: Dallas defense is better than advertised, but he’ll be fine. ****
RB Pierre Thomas: Role is slipping a bit, and production isn’t what it had been. ***
RB Mike Bell: Still getting the carries, but the yardage just isn’t there. **
RB Reggie Bush: Role is increasing, and he’s making plays again. ***
WR Marques Colston: Has scored in three straight, and he shouldn’t slow down. ****
WR Robert Meachem: Has been very solid, and is a solid WR3. ***
WR Devery Henderson: Pretty inconsistent, but ceiling is always high. **
TE Jeremy Shockey: Hasn’t done much lately, but he is due. **

Cleveland Browns @ Kansas City Chiefs

QB Brady Quinn: Match-up bodes well, and recent history suggests big game. ***
RB Chris Jennings: Should get them majority of the touches, and match-up isn’t terrible. ***
RB Jerome Harrison: Will get touches, but production is too inconsistent. **
WR Mohamed Massaquoi: Very inconsistent, but Quinn will throw to him in solid match-up. **
WR Josh Cribbs: Could be running even more than usual, so a solid WR3 in return leagues. ***
TE Evan Moore: Regressed a bit last week, but match-up bodes well. ***

QB Matt Cassel: Should be able to put up decent numbers with Bowe back and nice match-up. ***
RB Jamaal Charles: Browns can definitely be run on, and he’s coming off of a huge game. ****
WR Dwayne Bowe: Very good match-up, and he’s slated to start right away. ***
WR Chris Chambers: Could benefit greatly from Bowe’s return ***
WR Lance Long: Very unreliable, but Bowe’s return could open things up for him. **

Chicago Bears @ Baltimore Ravens

QB Jay Cutler: Ravens can definitely be passed on, but he’s been awful. **
RB Matt Forte: Not a good play against elite run defense. **
WR Devin Hester: Dealing with nagging injuries, and hasn’t looked great. **
WR Johnny Knox: Always has big-play potential, and solid match-up. ***
TE Greg Olsen: Hasn’t done jack in a month, but match-up is solid. ***

QB Joe Flacco: Very nice match-up, and he’s due for a big game. ****
RB Ray Rice: You just can’t sit this guy, especially against bad run defense. *****
RB Willis McGahee: Role is increasing, and is stealing touchdowns again. ***
WR Derrick Mason: Should get plenty of opportunities against another poor pass defense. ***
WR Mark Clayton: Has potential, but very unreliable, even with nice match-up. **
TE Todd Heap: Hasn’t been a reliable source of points all season. *

Arizona Cardinals @ Detroit Lions

QB Kurt Warner: Lions give up a ton of points in passing game, so play him. *****
RB Tim Hightower: Gets carries and match-up is nice. ***
RB Chris Wells: Was solid last week, save for a fumble, and match-up is good. ***
WR Larry Fitzgerald: Dealing with a knee injury, but should be good to go in great match-up. *****
WR Anquan Boldin: If Fitz is a decoy, he could be in for a huge day, and possibly regardless. *****
WR Steve Breaston: Hasn’t been used much lately, but match-up is awesome. **

QB Daunte Culpepper: Stafford is out again, but he’s still not worth a start. *
RB Maurice Morris: Should carry the load with Smith done for year, but not a great play. **
WR Calvin Johnson: Match-up isn’t horrible, but Culpepper kills his potential this week. ***
WR Bryant Johnson: Unreliable, but is facing former team. *

Atlanta Falcons @ New York Jets

QB Matt Ryan: Practicing again, will likely be game-time decision. **
QB Chris Redman: Not a great start if he plays, as Jets pass defense has been active. **
RB Michael Turner: Also practicing, and it’s a solid match-up, so might be worth a shot. ***
RB Jerious Norwood: Hasn’t done much with a decent role, and Turner might be back. *
RB Jason Snelling: Might spell Turner in short yardage situations, but not reliable. *
WR Roddy White: Has been very solid, but will see top corner Revis. **
WR Michael Jenkins: May benefit from White being tied up. **
TE Tony Gonzalez: Ryan’s return could mean a return to elite status for Gonzo. ***

QB Mark Sanchez: Looks like he’ll play this week, and does have a nice math-up. **
QB Kellen Clemens: Sanchez is due back, and he wasn’t very good last week, anyways. *
RB Thomas Jones: Should keep getting the rock a ton against poor run defense. *****
RB Shonn Greene: Still has decent role, but did fumble last week. **
RB Danny Woodhead: Is starting to have a nice smaller role, so usable in deep leagues. **
WR Jerricho Cotchery: If Sanchez is back, he could be a fine WR3. ***
WR Braylon Edwards: Has been a huge disappointment overall, but match-up is friendly. **
TE Dustin Keller: Sanchez’s return could get him some extra targets. ***

Miami Dolphins @ Tennessee Titans

QB Chad Henne: Titans have a solid overall defense, so it’ll be tough. **
RB Ricky Williams: Will have troubles, but the carries will be there. ***
RB Lex Hilliard: Should get some touches, but tough match-up. *
WR Greg Camarillo: Went off last week, but mach-up doesn’t bode well. **
WR Brian Hartline: Nothing special, but he gets 3-4 catches usually. **
WR Davone Bess: Came down off his cloud last week, so too unpredictable. **

QB Vince Young: Looks like he’ll play, but monitor status. ***
QB Kerry Collins: If he has to go, he should be OK against average defense. **
RB Chris Johnson: Should top 20 carries once again, and he’s been running hard. *****
RB Lendale White: Small role, so can’t expect much. **
WR Kenny Britt: Has been fairly consistent, even with Gage back. ***
WR Justin Gage: Should start getting more involved in decent match-up. **
WR Nate Washington: Has the potential, but just hasn’t been doing much. **

San Francisco 49ers @ Philadelphia Eagles

QB Alex Smith: Facing strong pass defense, but has looked solid and Eli torched them. ***
RB Frank Gore: Tough match-up, but will get the carries and some receptions. ****
WR Michael Crabtree: Has been playing well, and Smith looks for him more often. ***
WR Josh Morgan: Is slowly developing into a decent WR3, but not a great week to use him. **
TE Vernon Davis: The guy can’t be stopped, and Smith goes to him all day. ****

QB Donovan McNabb: 49ers can be difficult at times, and he’s been inconsistent. ***
RB LeSean McCoy: Will continue to get the bulk of the load, but not an easy match-up. ***
RB Leonard Weaver: Probably won’t get the touches to be a Flex this week. **
WR DeSean Jackson: Can beat the 49ers deep, so only needs a couple plays to be worth it. ***
WR Jeremy Maclin: Has a bad foot injury, and is likely out this week and for longer. **
WR Jason Avant: Should get extended action with Maclin nicked up. **
TE Brent Celek: Always a safe play, as he’s pretty active. ***

New England Patriots @ Buffalo Bills

QB Tom Brady: Not a good match-up at all, but he has the weapons to change that. ***
RB Laurence Maroney: Should get the rock a lot against bad run defense. ****
WR Randy Moss: Should bounce back from horrible showing last week, despite match-up. ***
WR Wes Welker: Always a strong bet for 10 catches and 100 yards, so you have to play him. ****
TE Benjamin Watson: Scored last week, so slightly back on radar. **

QB Ryan Fitzpatrick: Not a good play at all. **
RB Fred Jackson: Looked good last week and role is solid. ***
RB Marshawn Lynch: Solid role last week, but too inconsistent. **
WR Terrell Owens: Playing against Moss gets him going, so he could be big. ***
WR Lee Evans: Hasn’t done anything in weeks, so sit him. *

Houston Texans @ St. Louis Rams

QB Matt Schaub: Should have no issues at all. It’s the Rams. *****
RB Arian Foster: Is the new feature back, so a solid RB2. ***
RB Chris Brown: Should still get short yardage touches, so not a bad Flex. ***
RB Ryan Moats: Fumble issues have killed his role. *
WR Andre Johnson: Must-start every week, and should have huge game. *****
WR Kevin Walter: May not be needed, but decent WR3 value is there. ***
TE James Casey: Tight end no longer a factor in this offense. *

QB Keith Null: Was horrific last week, but Texans aren’t unbeatable through the air. **
RB Steven Jackson: Will be the main source of their offense as usual, so good play. ****
WR Donnie Avery: Null kills any value he had. *
WR Brandon Gibson: Gets open and plays well enough to be a decent W4. **
WR Danny Amendola: Active more on returns lately, so not a good play. *
TE Daniel Fells: Unreliable, but has potential for a few catches. *

Oakland Raiders @ Denver Broncos

QB Charlie Frye: Can’t like his chances in first start and against tough defense. *
RB Darren McFadden: Has a decent role, but facing a good run defense. **
RB Michael Bush: Has eight carries in past three games, so sit him. *
RB Justin Fargas: Role not big enough, and scary match-up. *
WR Louis Murphy: Only Oakland receiver with any real production, but hardly a WR3. *
TE Zach Miller: Should see some targets with Frye dumping it off. ***

QB Kyle Orton: Not a good match-up at all against stingy secondary, so look elsewhere. **
RB Knowshon Moreno: Should get plenty of touches with Buckhalter out. ****
RB Peyton Hillis: Could have decent role with Buckhalter out. **
WR Brandon Marshall: Won’t be catching 21 balls against this pass defense. ***
WR Eddie Royal: Has been more active, but Raiders are good against the pass. **

Cincinnati Bengals @ San Diego Chargers

QB Carson Palmer: Chargers likely still without Eric Weddle, but Palmer has been awful. **
RB Cedric Benson: Should get the rock a ton against beatable run defense. *****
RB Larry Johnson: Benson is the guy, and didn’t touch it much last week. *
WR Chad Ochocinco: Match-up isn’t bad, but success is tied to Palmer. ***
WR Laveranues Coles: Doesn’t do much, and is hardly worth a WR4 spot. *

QB Phillip Rivers: Not an easy match-up, but is playing too well to sit. ****
RB LaDainian Tomlinson: Should get plenty of carries in big game. ***
RB Darren Sproles: Role isn’t bad, but production isn’t there. **
WR Vincent Jackson: Always a solid play, and will be needed. ****
WR Malcolm Floyd: Is not a reliable starter, and hardly a WR3. **
TE Antonio Gates: Has been turning it on, and should be active. ****

Tampa Bay Buccaneers @ Seattle Seahawks

QB Josh Freeman: Decent match-up, but his decision-making renders him useless. **
RB Carnell Williams: Has been solid, and the match-up is good. ***
RB Derrick Ward: Still has an OK role, so worth a shot at the Flex. **
WR Antonio Bryant: Can beat Seattle’s corner so it’s up to Freeman. ***
TE Kellen Winslow: Still getting looks, and better match-up should help a lot. ***

QB Matt Hasselbeck: Hasn’t been performing well, even in “easy” match-ups. **
RB Julius Jones: Is the starter, so should be able to produce Flex results. ***
RB Justin Forsett: Role is still decent, but sharing the load hurts his value. ***
WR Nate Burleson: Should be active, and match-up is solid. ***
WR TJ Houshmandzadeh: Hasn’t done anything in weeks, but this could be his game. ***
TE John Carlson: Ditto. ***

Green Bay Packers @ Pittsburgh Steelers

QB Aaron Rodgers: Steelers can be passed on, but will he have time? ***
RB Ryan Grant: Not a good play at all on the road against good run defense. **
WR Donald Driver: Is usually active, and he’ll be needed this week. ***
WR Greg Jennings: Really only a WR3 at this point, but potential is always there. ***
WR James Jones: Has been consistent in his role, so a low-end WR3. **
TE Jermichael Finley: Steelers get burned by the tight end, and he’s been solid. ***

QB Ben Roethlisberger: Packers defense has looked good, so not a safe play. **
RB Rashard Mendenhall: He was their only solid option last week, and he’ll get the touches. ***
WR Hines Ward: It depends which corner he sees, but he usually shows up in big games. ***
WR Santonio Holmes: Has been solid lately, and was even a strong WR3 last week. ***
WR Mike Wallace: Has been very quiet, but could destroy Packers nickel corner. ***
TE Heath Miller: Got more involved last week, but Packers cover tight ends well. **

Minnesota Vikings @ Carolina Panthers

QB Brett Favre: Facing elite pass defense and didn’t look awesome in last prime-time game. ***
RB Adrian Peterson: Will get a ton of touches against weak run defense. *****
RB Chester Taylor: Has been active on third downs and short passes, so not a horrible Flex. **
WR Sidney Rice: Tough match-up, but he doesn’t stay quiet for long. ***
WR Percy Harvin: Migraines could keep him out again, so check status. **
WR Bernard Berrian: Has been OK the past few weeks, so can be used as WR3. **
TE Visanthe Shiancoe: Great red-zone target, and has been getting more passes his way. ***

QB Matt Moore: Not a good bet with Antoine Winfield back for Minnesota. *
RB DeAngelo Williams: Good play any week, but Williams Wall kills his value. ***
RB Jonathan Stewart: Ditto. **
WR Steve Smith: Will be covered tightly by Winfield, so only a WR3 this week. ***
WR Muhsin Muhammad: No one outside of Smith is playable in receiving corps. *

New York Giants @ Washington Redskins

QB Eli Manning: Manning has been red-hot, and Skins’ can be had through the air. ****
RB Brandon Jacobs: Still looking for first 100-yard game, but match-up decent. ***
RB Ahmad Bradshaw: Still getting carries, so Flex potential is there. **
WR Steve Smith: Still a very reliable WR2, and an elite WR3. ***
WR Hakeem Nicks: Really stepping up, and is officially number two receiver. ***
WR Mario Manningham: Lost starting job to Nicks, but should still get some looks. **
TE Kevin Boss: Is very inconsistent, but could find success against Skins’ linebackers. ***

QB Jason Campbell: Has looked solid and Giants can’t stop anyone. ****
RB Quinton Ganther: Has the full load and should have decent success. ***
WR Santana Moss: Is due for a big game, and Giants corners can get beat. ****
WR Devin Thomas: Has potential, and not a bad match-up at all. **
TE Fred Davis: Is really coming around, and Campbell likes going to him. ***

Fantasy Bye Week Saviors – Week 10

Posted on 13 November 2009 by Kevin

We’ve already addressed the Waiver Wire this week, so now it’s time to combine that research and logic with the roster make-up you currently have to find the best possible replacements for the key players you’re losing due to Week 10 byes.

The teams that have a bye this week are the Houston Texans and New York Giants.

We’re not missing a ton of studs, but depending on your roster, you still may have to scramble to replace some starters.

Key players that need to be replaced this week:

Matt Schaub, Eli Manning, Andre Johnson, Steve Smith, Brandon Jacobs, Ahmad Bradshaw.

Hakeem Nicks, Mario Marringham, Kevin Walter, Steve Slaton, and Ryan Moats are all fairly easy to replace, as they are all WR3’s or Flex plays currently.

Read on for the best available players to replace each position:

Matt Hasselbeck, QB, Seattle Seahawks

Hasselbeck was solid against the Lions, going over 300 yards, with one touchdown and one interception. He faces another weak secondary in the Arizona Cardinals this week, and there’s no reason why he can’t find success again. True, he didn’t fare very well against them last time, but Hasselbeck’s pass protection was stellar in Week Nine, and after seeing Jay Cutler throw 300+ yards and three touchdowns against them, there’s plenty of room for optimism.

Available in 46% of leagues.

Mark Sanchez, QB, New York Jets

Sanchez, another Waiver Wire alum, is playing very well, and has a nice match-up with the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 10. The Jaguars are inept enough against the run that Thomas Jones and co. should be able to take the pressure off, while their pass defense is weak enough that Sanchez should be able to find some big plays. With five total touchdowns in his past two games, “Sanchize” could be a sneaky sleeper start this week.

Available in 63% of leagues.

Alex Smith, QB, San Francisco 49ers

He made our Waiver Wire Watch as well, simply because he’s availability is astonishing, despite throwing for six touchdowns in his last three games, and throwing for at least 198 yards in each contest over that span. Smith goes up against a Chicago Bears defense that just allowed Kurt Warner to throw five touchdowns, so we like his chances.

Available in 89% of leagues.

Mike Bell, RB, New Orleans Saints

Bell’s carries dropped down to just five against Carolina, but that was almost completely because New Orleans fell to an early defecit and had to pass their way out of it. Before last week’s sub-par effort, Bell has toted the ball at least 15 times in four of his six contests. He shares the ball with starter Pierre Thomas, but the Saints are committed to the run and the touches are there. With an easy match-up against the St. Louis Rams, you could see Bell running more than usual toward the end of the game.

Available in 59% of leagues.

Ladell Betts, RB, Washinton Redskins

Clinton Portis sutained a concussion in Week Nine’s loss to the Atlanta Falcons, and Betts stepped in and ran for 70 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries, while also hauling in a reception for 23 yards. Betts proved to be a quality fantasy back the last time he took over for Portis (season-ending injury), and with Portis likely to miss Week 10, Betts will get the bulk of the carries against the Denver Broncos.

Available in 91% of leagues.

Chris Chambers, WR, Kansas City Chiefs

Chambers rattled off 70 yards and two scores on just three catches in his debut, so there’s a lot of optimism that he can produce even better numbers if he can get the ball more in his second game. The more he is able to grasp the offense, the better off he and Matt Cassel (and you) will be. Chambers has a tough date with a stingy Oakland Raiders pass defense, but he should get plenty enough action to make him a fine WR3 this week.

Available in 78% of leagues.

James Jones, WR, Green Bay Packers

Jones broke-out on an elite level for the first time this season, grabbing four passes and making the most of them, en route to 104 yards and a touchdown, including a beautiful 74-yard touchdown. With Green Bay hosting a solid Dallas Cowboys defense at home Jones will have plenty of room to work with as the Cowboys top corners concentrate on stopping Greg Jennings and Donald Driver. He figures to be a solid WR3 this week.

Available in 97% of leagues.

Dustin Keller, TE, New York Jets

Keller had his best game since the first game of the season in Week Eight, as he caught eight balls for 76 yards and his first touchdown catch since Week Two. Mark Sanchez is starting to get his confidence back, but is now playing smarter football, checking down to his tight end and running back when he gets in trouble. Keller could easily revert back to 2-3 catches per game, but a nice match-up against the Jacksonville Jaguars says his solid production will continue.

Available in 55% of leagues.

San Francisco 49ers Defense

The 49ers have not been themselves on defense in quite a few weeks, but their run of incomplacency and inconsistent play has to end sometime, especially with Mike Singletary as their head coach. They’re worth a shot as they go up against potential turnover machine Jay Cuter in Week 10.

Available in 41% of leagues.

Cincinnati Bengals Defense

There are a number of quality defenses in the free agency pool, but none as complete and effective as the Bengals, especially considering their availability. Snatch them up as they figure to be involved in another low-scoring affair with the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 10.

Available in 65% of leagues.

WR Percy Harvin: A demon in return yardage leagues, and becoming reliable WR3. ***
TE Visanthe Shiancoe: Always active near the goal-line, so worth a shot. ***

Cincinnati Bengals @ Pittsburgh Steelers

QB Carson Palmer: Steelers pass defense isn’t invincible, but not a great match-up. **
RB Cedric Benson: He’ll get the carries, but success will be hard to find against Steelers. ***
WR Chad Ochocinco: Could be very active with Steelers likely stopping the run. ***
WR Laveranues Coles: Is getting more involved, but don’t expect the world. **
WR Andre Caldwell: Will see a few more targets, but not very reliable. *

QB Ben Roethlisberger: Continues to play well against top defenses, so start him. ****
RB Rashard Mendenhall: Ditto. ****
WR Hines Ward: Ward loves facing the Bengals, so a solid play. ***
WR Santonio Holmes: Still looking for first score since week one. Is this the week? ***
WR Mike Wallace: Good for some yards and a possible score on any given week. **
TE Heath Miller: Weak showing against Denver, but is still involved well enough. ***

Buffalo Bills @ Tennessee Titans

QB Trent Edwards: Titans pass defense is getting better and Edwards hasn’t been good. *
RB Marshawn Lynch: Yards will be tough to come by, but should get the carries. **
RB Fred Jackson: Is slipping out of the offense, but can still be used as a Flex. *
WR Lee Evans: The only “reliable” option in Buffalo, and that is being nice. **
WR Terrell Owens: Can’t be counted on, even against a 2-6 team. **

QB Vince Young: Will let the rush offense do the work, so don’t expect much. **
RB Chris Johnson: Should continue his ridiculous roll against horrible run defense *****
RB Lendale White: Could get some action against bad run defense. ***
WR Justin Gage: Looking sharp and had an awesome catch last week. **
WR Kenny Britt: Too inconsistent to rely on. *
TE Bo Scaife: Young likes him, and Bills are only so-so against tight ends. **

Denver Broncos @ Washington Redskins

QB Kyle Orton: Washington’s defense is fairly stingy, and he hasn’t been playing well. **
RB Knowshon Moreno: Michael Turner burned them, so he has a chance to bounce back. ***
RB Correll Buckhalter: Still getting solid amount of carries, but tough match-up. **
WR Brandon Marshall: Redskins are falling apart, but pass defense is still holding up. ***
WR Eddie Royal: Isn’t getting it done enough to even be a consistent WR3 right now. **
TE Tony Scheffler: Not a reliable option, no matter the opponent. *

QB Jason Campbell: Will he even last the game? Tough match-up. *
RB Ladell Betts: Should get the bulk of the carries, so worth a shot as a Flex. **
RB Clinton Portis: Unlikely to play with concussion. *
WR Santana Moss: Only real threat on offense, so he’ll get some looks. **
TE Fred Davis: Was a disappointment last week and Denver stops tight ends pretty well. *

New Orleans Saints @ St. Louis Rams

QB Drew Brees: Only real concern is a big lead may take him out of the game *****
RB Pierre Thomas: Gets the majority of the carries and will be able to run all day. ****
RB Mike Bell: Had an off week last week, but good match-up and he gets the ball. ***
RB Reggie Bush: Only a threat as a receiver now, and way too inconsistent. **
WR Marques Colston: Should bounce back after registering just one catch against Panthers. *****
WR Devery Henderson: Definitely potential here, but may not be needed. ***
WR Robert Meachem: Ditto. **
TE Jeremy Shockey: Could be targeted early, but probably won’t finish the game. ***

QB Marc Bulger: Will throw all day, but Saints pass defense can terrorize at times. **
RB Steve Jackson: Could gash the Saints vulnerable run defense if he gets going. ****
WR Donnie Avery: Not a huge threat, but they should throw while behind. **
WR Keenan Burton: Can get some grabs, but not much else. *
WR Danny Amendola: Coming back from injury and should be active underneath. **

Jacksonville Jaguars @ New York Jets

QB David Garrard: Looked OK last week, but just hasn’t been reliable. **
RB Maurice Jones-Drew: Jets can be run on now, and you don’t sit him. *****
WR Mike Sims-Walker: Had a huge game last week, so roll with him. ***
WR Torry Holt: Hasn’t scored all season, and not likely to do so this week. **
TE Marcedes Lewis: Hasn’t been consistent lately. *

QB Mark Sanchez: Has looked confident and sharp, and Jaguars D is weak. ***
RB Thomas Jones: Should run all day to ease pressure off of Sanchez. *****
RB Shonn Greene: If Jones gets going, he’ll help out with 10+ carries. ***
WR Jerricho Cotchery: Could see some targets to help the run game. ***
WR Braylon Edwards: Nice match-up to try some deep balls, so worth a shot. ***
TE Dustin Keller: Was stellar in last game, and nice match-up. ***

Kansas City Chiefs @ Oakland Raiders

QB Matt Cassel: Came on late last week, but Raiders pass defense is tough. **
RB Jamaal Charles: Splitting carries and role uncertain, but Oakland’s run D is weak. **
RB Kolby Smith: Got involved last week, and should see solid action this week. **
WR Dwayne Bowe: He’ll get targets, but the match-up isn’t easy. ***
WR Chris Chambers: Blew everyone away in his debut, so there’s hope. **
WR Lance Long: Came out of nowhere, and could continue to surprise from the slot. **

QB Jamarcus Russell: It’s the Chiefs, so even Russell could do some damage. *
RB Darren McFadden: First game back, so don’t expect the world. **
RB Justin Fargas: Should still get some carries, even if McFadden starts. **
TE Zach Miller: Could be pretty active as Oakland receivers are trash. **

Seattle Seahawks @ Arizona Cardinals

QB Matt Hasselbeck: Cardinals destroyed him last time, but AZ secondary is terrible. ***
RB Julius Jones: Just doesn’t show up to games, and Cardinals stop run OK. **
RB Justin Forsett: Was active in the passing game, so could get more involved. *
WR Nate Burleson: Hasselbeck’s favorite target should get open plenty. ***
WR TJ Houshmandzadeh: Finally put it all together last week, but can’t guarantee repeat performance. ***
TE John Carlson: Is this the week he finally hooks up with Hasselbeck? ***

QB Kurt Warner: Coming off of huge game and Seattle’s defense isn’t too scary. ****
RB Tim Hightower: Had a nice game but is still sharing carries with Wells. **
RB Chris Wells: Looking better every week, but still in timeshare. **
WR Larry Fitzgerald: Must-start every week. *****
WR Anquan Boldin: Should be good to go, and plays well against Seattle. ***
WR Steve Breaston: Is very reliable and a decent WR3. ***

Dallas Cowboys @ Green Bay Packers

QB Tony Romo: Packers couldn’t stop Josh Freeman, so you have to like the match-up. *****
RB Marion Barber: Splitting carries hurts his value, and he hasn’t scored in a while. ***
RB Tashard Choice: Scored last week but the touches just aren’t there. **
RB Felix Jones: Poor showing last week, but has been fairly involved. **
WR Miles Austin: Cannot be stopped right now, and it won’t happen this week. ****
WR Roy Williams: Turned in solid effort against Philly, and plays well against Pack. ***
TE Jason Witten: Packers cover right end well, but he plays more like a WR. ***

QB Aaron Rodgers: He’s the top fantasy QB, so you can’t sit him. ****
RB Ryan Grant: Can’t run against teams with winning records, so sit him. **
WR Donald Driver: Has been very active all season, so great play. ****
WR Greg Jennings: Cowboys secondary will keep him in check. **
WR James Jones: Could be active underneath with Jennings under wraps. ***
TE Donald Lee: Limited value, especially if Finley plays. **
TE Jermichael Finley: If fully healthy, could be a solid play. **

Philadelphia Eagles @ San Diego Chargers

QB Donovan McNabb: Chargers pass defense is decent, but he should be okay. ***
RB LeSean McCoy: Has a shot at his second straight start, and Bolts run D is weak. ***
RB Brian Westbrook: Even if he plays, what can you really expect from him? **
RB Leonard Weaver: Keeps stealing carries, so could have value if Westbrook is out. **
WR DeSean Jackson: Locked down last week, so should do something this week. ****
WR Jeremy Maclin: Has been OK and fairly reliable, so worth a shot. ***
TE Brent Celek: Isn’t flashy, but fairly consistent and reliable. ***

QB Phillip Rivers: Can’t bet against Rivers as he’s on fire right now. *****
RB LaDainian Tomlinson: Hasn’t looked good and Eagles are solid. **
RB Darren Sproles: Too inconsistent to rely on. *
WR Vincent Jackson: Makes plays in every game, so have to start him. ****
WR Malcom Floyd: Not a flashy starter, and isn’t a great start. **
TE Antonio Gates: Eagles did well against Witten, so a little worrisome. ***

New England Patriots @ Indianapolis Colts

QB Tom Brady: Colts pass defense continues to dominate, but you have to play him. ****
RB Laurence Maroney: Will they be going after Larry Johnson? **
WR Randy Moss: Has been very good, and should cause match-up problems. ****
WR Wes Welker: Hard to cover underneath, and is always active. ****
TE Benjamin Watson: Can’t be depended on, but scores randomly. **

QB Peyton Manning: Shouldn’t have any major problems, but Patriots defense isn’t bad. *****
RB Joseph Addai: Is playing better, and Manning likes throwing to him. ***
RB Donald Brown: Not as involved as he was and still has nagging injuries. **
WR Reggie Wayne: As long as he doesn’t keep throwing anymore picks he’ll be fine. *****
WR Pierre Garcon: Has gotten more looks the past two weeks, so worth a shot. ***
WR Austin Collie: Had an off game against Houston, but should be active. ***
TE Dallas Clark: Always a safe start, and match-up isn’t terrible. *****

Baltimore Ravens @ Cleveland Browns

QB Joe Flacco: The Browns overall defense is pretty bad, so expect a solid game. ****
RB Ray Rice: He should roam free all day against a horrid run defense. *****
WR Derrick Mason: Is too smart and crafty to drop a weak effort on this team. ***
WR Mark Clayton: Is involved enough to be a decent Flex play if needed. **
WR Kelley Washington: Way too inconsistent to be relied upon. *
TE Todd Heap: If he’s going to have a big game again, this might be it. **

QB Brady Quinn: Reportedly getting the start against a match-up from hell. *
QB Derek Anderson: Reportedly benched, but you never know. *
RB Jamal Lewis: Ran OK against Chicago, and Baltimore did let Benson run wild. **
RB Jerome Harrison: Is merely a third down option, so shouldn’t even be owned. *
WR Mohamed Massaquoi: Drops way too many passes, but Quinn will throw to him. **
WR Josh Cribbs: Gets touches in the Wildcat, but true value is in returns. *

Waiver Wire Wonders – Week 9

Posted on 06 November 2009 by Chris

Start/Sit columns attempt to help you pick between several options, highlighting guys that are on every team, or suggesting to sit guys that would normally be “studs”. While those columns definitely have their place in fantasy football, sometimes you need to dig a little bit deeper.

When you don’t have the Tom Brady’s and Andre Johnson’s of the fantasy world, sometimes you need a little extra help to locate the next “gem” that’s lurking on your waiver wire in your league.

The following players are available in at at least 50% of Yahoo! leagues this week, and would make excellent additions to your depleted or bye week-starving roster:

Alex Smith, QB, San Francisco 49ers

Alex SmithSmith came out on fire against the Houston Texans two weeks ago, throwing for over 200 yards and three touchdowns. He ran into a bit of a road block against a stellar pass defense in Indianapolis last week, but kept optimism alive with 198 passing yards and a touchdown pass to Vernon Davis.

Going up against a spotty Tennessee Titans pass defense, Smith should shoulder much of the load, as Frank Gore and the rushing attack should struggle to find room against the Titans’ solid rush defense.

Available in 80% of leagues.

Vince Young, QB, Tennessee Titans

Vince YoungMuch like Alex Smith, Young is getting his last chance at proving himself, and so far, so good. Young passed for just 125 yards and a touchdown last week, but also found 35 yards on the ground in a convincing 30-13 win over Jacksnville, the Titan’s first of the season.

The 49ers are a proud defense, and will look to shut down the ground game of Chris Johnson and Lendale White, which could make Young take the game into his own hands, both in the air, and on the ground.

Available in 90% of leagues.

Jamaal Charles, RB, Kansas City Chiefs

Jamaal CharlesWith the one-game suspension of starter Larry Johnson, Charles officially gets his chance to claim the starting job as his. Charles has a nice match-up with a Jacksonville run defense that gave up 200+ yards and two scores to Chris Johnson, so he has a good chance at solid numbers.

Charles could prove to be a solid player to hold onto after this week, as well, as LJ’s future is very much in doubt.

Available in 61% of leagues.

Justin Forsett, RB, Seattle Seahawks

Justin ForsettForsett climbs into Edgerrin James’ old shoes, as he takes over for the recently released veteran as Julius Jones’ top back-up. James wasn’t even averaging 3.0 yards per carry, and with Jones continued struggles, there could be plenty of touches there for the taking especially as Seattle tries to get back into first place in the NFC West.

Forsett is a very athletic and dynamic player that should excel immediately on third downs, and could see his role expand quickly if Jones continues to hold the offense back.

Available in 97% of leagues.

Kevin Walter, WR, Houston Texans

Kevin WalterWalter just misses the cut at 49%, but we can’t leave him off this list. He’s suffered immensely this year as Matt Schaub has enjoyed great success by passing mainly to Andre Johnson and Owen Daniels.

However, with the season-ending injury to Daniels, someone will have to take those targets, and there’s no doubt that at least half of those targets will trickle down to Walter. He has soft hands and excellent play-making ability, so 4-5 grabs should make him a solid WR3 in most leagues.

Available in 49% of leagues.

Chris Chambers, WR, Kansas City Chiefs

Chris ChambersChambers may have proven to be just an average weapon in San Diego, but in KC, he could turn out to be a fantasy God. He doesn’t have a Vincent Jackson, Antonio Gates, or even Darren Sproles to compete with for targets, and outside of Dwayne Bowe, none of the other receivers truly challenge to start ahead of him.

He may not be a lock to rack up numbers in his first game, but 1-2 weeks down the road, you could be very happy you took a chance on the guy that San Diego felt was “finished”.

Available in 83% of leagues.

Fantasy Player Breakdown – Week 5

Posted on 10 October 2009 by Kevin

Sick of the regular start and sit columns that pick five random guys to take a chance on, and then five other guys who you shouldn’t? Yeah, me neither. But still, sometimes fantasy owners need a bit more information than a lousy 100-player board ranking, a start and sit column, or an injury report.

This player breakdown takes a look at every NFL match-up, and the top players from each team. Take a look at some quick analysis that should gently push you in the right direction as far as getting the best possible roster set-up for Sunday and Monday.

Sunday Games

Cincinnati Bengals @ Baltimore Ravens

Carson PalmerQB Carson Palmer: The Ravens should stop the run without difficulty, so expect Palmer to throw a ton.
RB Cedric Benson: He averaged less than two yards per carry last year, and isn’t at full health.
WR Chad Ochocinco: Not a great match-up, but should be targeted enough to be a solid WR3.
WR Laveranues Coles: Hasn’t been reliable all season. Not a good match-up at all.

QB Joe Flacco: Is playing well, and could have twice as a good a day as Derek Anderson had last week.
RB Ray Rice: Not a touchdown king, but has been a beast with the yards. Play him with confidence.
RB Willis McGahee: Should score as usual. Not a match-up to fear.
WR Derrick Mason: A strong WR3 no matter who the opponent is. Could have a nice day.
WR Mark Clayton: Needs to bounce back after last week’s drop. Bengals secondary could allow some big plays.

Minnesota Vikings @ St. Louis Rams

Adrian PetersonQB Brett Favre: Has been extremely hot and this is a nice match-up.
RB Adrian Peterson: If Favre can take the pressure off as he has been doing, AD should have a huge day.
WR Bernard Berrian: Minnesota is attacking deep more, so definitely a possibility for a big play or two.
WR Percy Harvin: Was quiet last week, and could be active with no one on St. Louis who can contain him.
WR Sidney Rice: Has scored in two straight and Favre likes him. Makes for a decent WR4.

QB Kyle Boller: Should get the start with Bulger not 100%, but not a good play against a solid defense.
RB Steven Jackson: Minnesota can top the run, but how can you sit S-Jax?
WR Donnie Avery: He and Keenan Burton are questionable, but aren’t good plays, anyways.
TE Randy McMichael: Has been very average, but Minnesota got burned by the tight end the past two weeks.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers @ Philadelphia Eagles

QB Josh Johnson: Was only average against Washington, so you can’t hope for much against a solid Philly defense.
RB Carnell Williams: Eagles stop the run fairly well, but he’s the feature back for now, so there could be decent numbers.
WR Antonio Bryant: Could test Philly’s secondary a bit, but with Johnson under center, likely only a low-end WR3 this week.
TE Kellen Winslow: Should be active as Johnson’s security blanket.

Donovan McNabbQB Donovan McNabb: As long as he finishes the game, could have a huge first-game back.
RB Brian Westbrook: Is splitting carries, but Tampa’s awful run defense is too good to ignore.
RB LeSean McCoy: Should see 10-15 touches and could post solid Flex numbers.
WR DeSean Jackson: Is healthy and has been absolutely on fire. Don’t expect it to stop against the Bucs sad secondary.
WR Kevin Curtis: Hasn’t done anything, but is healthy and has a beautiful match-up. If he’s going to get going ever, this would be the best stage for it.
TE Brent Celek: All he did was record 100 yard games with Kevin Kolb under center. That should chance, but he’s still a solid TE1 for now.

Washington Redskins @ Carolina Panthers

QB Jason Campbell: It’s not always pretty, but Campbell has been a fine QB2. Panthers can be beat deep, too.
RB Clinton Portis: Looked better last week, and could have the same kind of success against pathetic Panther run defense.
WR Santana Moss: Has been on fire the past two weeks, and he’s finally becoming Campbell’s favorite target.
TE Chris Cooley: Has had three solid outings out of the first four games. Is a solid TE1 against a weak Carolina defense.

Steve SmithQB Jake Delhomme: Has been “ok’ since week one, but may have to throw more than he’d like to.
RB DeAngelo Williams: Panthers should get back to their run-first ways, but it could be hard with a healthy Albert Haynesworth in the middle.
RB Jonatha Stewart: Should get 10-12 touches, but he simply hasn’t been producing.
WR Steve Smith: No one does more with less. Expect some big plays and a score.
WR Muhsin Muhammad: Posing as a solid WR4 and could put up WR3 numbers this week.

Pittsburgh Steelers @ Detroit Lions

benrQB Ben Roethlisberger: Shouldn’t have any trouble against beatable secondary.
RB Rashard Mendenhall: Has great momentum after last weak’s excellent performance. Don’t bet on it stopping against Detroit.
WR Santonio Holmes: Has been invisible since the opener. This could be his break-out game.
WR Hines Ward: Has been excellent all season long, but has yet to score a touchdown. This could be his week, as well.

QB Daunte Culpepper: Figures to start with Stafford being held out, but match-up is not favorable.
RB Kevin Smith: Scored twice last week despite injury. Yardage won’t be there, but could score again.
WR Calvin Johnson: Always a must-start. Culpepper should find him deep a few times.
WR Bryant Johnson: Has been wildly inconsistent, so this isn’t a great week to use him.

Oakland Raiders @ New York Giants

QB Jamarcus Russell: Wasn’t good at all against Houston, and figures to have a career-worst game this week.
RB Michael Bush: The running game is Oakland’s only chance, so Bush should see a lot of action early.
RB Justin Fargas: Will split carries and should get third down duties. Not a horrible Flex option.
WR Louis Murphy: Saw 11 targets last week and only hauled-in 3 passes. That was against the Texans. Plain and simple: No Oakland receivers are fantasy options.

Brandon JacobsQB Eli Manning: Probably won’t pass a lot because of heel injury. Besides, Oakland pass defense is fairly solid.
RB Brandon Jacobs: Giants will run the ball all day if possible, so could see huge production here.
RB Ahmad Bradshaw: See above: Bradshaw hasn’t really practiced the past two weeks, but is still a solid Flex play against the Raiders.
WR Steve Smith: Likely New York’s only real threat at receiver this week, but probably won’t project any better than a WR3.

Dallas Cowboys @ Kansas City Chiefs

Marion BarberQB Tony Romo: Has been very average since week one, and should explode against week KC defense.
RB Marion Barber: Is at almost full health, and KC can’t stop the run.
RB Tashard Choice: Wont get a fair split in carries, but still makes for a decent Flex play.
WR Patrick Crayton: Should be the number one with Roy Williams likely out. Could be a solid WR2 this week.
WR Miles Austin: Should step up with excellent big-play potential with Williams out.
TE Jason Witten: Romo’s favorite target should see plenty of action, as usual.

QB Matt Cassel: Hasn’t been a yardage king, but could post solid numbers while playin from behind.
RB Larry Johnson: Hasn’t been killing, but is definitely getting the touches. Not a terrible Flex play.
WR Dwayne Bowe: Only had one catch last week, but could have a big day if at full health.
WR Mark Bradley: Hasn’t done much as a starter, so not a lot of hope here.

Cleveland Browns @ Buffalo Bills

Joshua CribbsQB Derek Anderson: Buffalo’s pass defense is awful and Anderson was solid last week.
RB Jerome Harrison: Ronnie Brown has 100+ rushing yards and two scores last week, so there is success to be had for Harrison.
WR Mohamed Massaquoi: Braylon Edwards is gone, and Derek Anderson loves the deep ball, so he should be very active.
WR Josh Cribbs: Is a stud in leagues giving return points, and continues to get some touches on offense.

QB Trent Edwards: Has been very unspectacular, but could find some success against the 29th ranked pass defense.
RB Fred Jackson: Was still effective while sharing the load last week, so is still a viable Flex option.
RB Marshawn Lynch: He had no running room last week, but has a shot against a very bad Cleveland run defense.
WR Terrell Owens: Can only fly as high as Edwards allows him, but there’s potential here.
WR Lee Evans: Has topped 32 yards just once all season, but could find some open spaces this week.

Atlanta Falcons @ San Francisco 49ers

michael_turnerQB Matt Ryan: It’s hard to sit Ryan, but outide of Favre’s later heroics in week three, San Francisco’s pass defense has been solid.
RB Michael Turner: Turner is struggling mightily against 3-4 defense, and the 49ers have one of the best in the league.
WR Roddy White: White always offers big-play potential, so you have to start him.
TE Tony Gonzalez: Has been money all season, so a must-start.

QB Shaun Hill: Isn’t the sexiest option, but could have success if Coffee gets going.
RB Glen Coffee: Hasn’t been overly explosive or impressive, but the Falcons have almost zero run defense.
WR Josh Morgan: No 49ers receiver has been dynamite, but he’s your best bet if you’re desperate.
TE Vernon Davis: Hill’s favorite target, by far, and is getting better every week. Start him with confidence.

Houston Texans @ Arizona Cardinals

QB Matt Schaub: Wasn’t very good last week, and should bounce-back in a shoot-out.
RB Steve Slaton: Finally got it going last week, and could build some momentum against average AZ defense.
WR Andre Johnson: Won’t be shut-down like he was last week. Count on a big game.
WR Kevin Walter: Only had one catch last week, but his big-play ability still makes him a decent WR3.
TE Owen Daniels: Arizona couldn’t contain Dallas Clark, so Daniels should have some success.

larry-fitzgerald-dominated-playoffsQB Kurt Warner: Texans defense is decent, but not good enough to keep Warner from having best game of season.
RB Tim Hightower: Hasn’t done much outside of week two, but has a good shot against 32nd ranked run defense.
WR Larry Fitzgerald: Keep waiting on that break-out game. Clearly a must-start.
WR Anquan Boldin: He should be healthy, and 16 catches on the season out on an unhealthy Boldin suggest a big game against Houston.

Jacksonville Jaguars @ Seattle Seahawks

Maurice Jones DrewQB David Garrard: Should pick-up where he left off last week, as Seattle’s defense hasn’t been great.
RB Maurice Jones-Drew: Start him every week.
WR Mike Sims-Walker: Last week showed that he has the talent to be a true WR1 someday, and sits as a solid fantasy WR2 for now.
WR Torry Holt: He’s regressing, but the Jags’ solid pass offense keeps him as a valid WR3.
TE Marcedes Lewis: Has really come on and is closing in on a TE1 status, but is still inconsistent.

QB Matt Hasselbeck: Some inevitable rust and a shaky line make him a risky play, but the Jaguars can’t defend the pass.
RB Julius Jones:
WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh: Isn’t a big threat to score, but should get plenty of targets.
WR Nate Burleson: Has big-play potential, and could have a big day if Hasselbeck can stay on his feet.
TE John Carlson: Has his pal Hasselbeck back, so his value is fairly high against the Jags.

New England Patriots @ Denver Broncos

Wes Welker and Randy MossQB Tom Brady: Look for Brady to have a big game as Belhick tries to embarrass his student, McDaniels.
RB Sammy Morris: May be the starter by default, but will split carries against Denver.
RB Laurence Maroney: Hasn’t shown us anything this season, but could finally get a real chance this week.
WR Randy Moss: Finally scored last week, but could have some trouble against Champ Bailey.
WR Wes Welker: Should be active underneath all day, and as long as he’s healthy, should post elite WR3 numbers.

QB Kyle Orton: Orton has been solid and hasn’t thrown a pick all season, so he’s not a terrible option.
RB Knowshon Moreno: Gets the first start of his carrer, and though the match-up isn’t great, he should see enough touches to have solid RB2 value.
WR Brandon Marshall: Has come on strong in the past two weeks and should be fairly active.
WR Eddie Royal: Hasn’t done anything all season, so hard to hope for anything special this week.

Monday Night Game

New York Jets @ Miami Dolphins

Mark SanchezQB Mark Sanchez: Jets might run a lot to shift focus away from Sanchez. Then again, he could shred-up the Dolphins’ weak secondary.
RB Thomas Jones: Should get a good dose of the ball as long as the Jets have the lead.
RB Leon Washington: Should get his usual 10-15 touches, but has yet to score this season.
WR Jerricho Cotchery: Is questionable for Monday’s game with a hamstring injury, so not a safe play this week.
WR Braylon Edwards: Is in his first week with his new team, but will likely be Sanchez’s new top option with Cotchery possibly out and Chansi Stuckey now in Cleveland.
TE Dustin Keller: Could see more targets than usual with injuries and inexperience at receiver.

Chad HenneQB Chad Henne: Shouldn’t be relied on as a fantasy contributor right now, and faces tough task in front of the nation.
RB Ronnie Brown: Is just getting into a groove, and should have productive day, despite Jets tough defense.
RB Ricky Williams: Has been making things happen this season, but hasn’t been great against Jets lately.
WR Ted Ginn Jr.: Extremely inconsistent and has just once catch through the past two weeks. Not a great play here.
WR Davone Bess: Didn’t do much last week, but has caught seven passes in a game twice this year. Should be active against the Jets, as Darrelle Revis will take-out Ginn.

Bye Week Saviors – Week 5

Posted on 06 October 2009 by Kevin

On comes another week of frustration and panic, as you scramble to find waiver wire players worthy of picking up to fill-in for your bye week players, or contemplate a desperate trade to eithe keep your 1-3 team afloat, or keep your undefeated run going.

It was funny last week when you had one or zero bye week options to worry about. But with the bye week teams coming at you at full force, it’s time for a little direction.

This column takes a look at which guys who are available in more than 50 percent of Yahoo! leagues, who could be serviceable to you in week five.

First, here’s a look at all the teams that have bye’s this week:

Chicago Bears, New Orleans Saints, San Diego Chargers, and Green Bay Packers

In addition to pick-up advice, e-mail in to kevin.roberts@cuw.edu for any other fantasy advice.

Solid Plays

Kyle Orton, QB, Denver Broncos

Last Game: 20-29, 243 yds, 2 TD, 0 INT

The week Josh McDaniels goes up against his former boss could mean the end of Orton’s no-interception streak, as well as Denver’s undefeated record. Then again, maybe the Broncos really have something going here.

Regardless, Orton has hooked-up with Brandon Marshall in two straight games for touchdowns, and has passed for at least 243 yards in three of his last four games. Orton should be passing plenty in what could be a shoot-out.

Available in 51% of leagues.

Jason Campbell, QB, Washington Redskins

Last Game: 12-22, 172 yds, 2 TD, 3 INT

Campbell was extremely erratic against a horrible Tampa Bay defense, but did end the day with two scores and over 170 yards passing. Not great, true, but with a decent match-up against a depressed Carolin team, he could find some confidence.

Don’t expect mountains to move, but if Clinton Portis gets going, Campbell could easily get 220+ yards and two scores.

Available in 59% of leagues.

Mark Sanchez, QB, New York Jets

Last Game: 14-27, 138 yds, 0 TD, 3 INT

Congratulations, Mark Sanchez, you’re both a rookie and human. Big deal. The Saints have a good defense, and Sanchez didn’t go 16 games without making a fool of himself.

Expect a big bounce-back game by Sanchez and the Jets against a hapless Miami team on Monday Night Football.

Available in 50% of leagues.

Other quarterbacks worthy of risks: Derek Anderson and Shaun Hill

Jerome Harrison, RB, Cleveland Browns

Last Game: 29 rush, 121 yds, 0 TD, 5 rec, 31 yds, 0 TD

Harrison has yet to score a touchdown this season and is still on a Browns offense that hasn’t been very prolific in quite some time, but there’s also a lot to like about him.

With James Davis on IR and Jamal Lewis nursing injuries, Harrison is the starter right now, and is at the very worst in a time-share at running back. With Derek Anderson under center, the offense should continue to stretch the field more, as well, opening things up even further for Harrison.

With Derek Anderson having good odds against a porous Buffalo secondary, Harrison could enjoy his second-straight 100+ yard effort.

Available in 74% of leagues.

Ahmad Bradshaw, RB, New York Giants

Last Game: 12 rush, 64 yds, 0 TD

Bradshaw is the second head on a brutal running offense for the Giants, and with Eli Manning now nursing a heel injury, he could see even more action.

With at least 60 yards rushing in three of four games this season, incuding one 100-yard performance, Bradshaw has proven he is capable of being a solid Flex option, and could put up solid numbers against Oakland as a bye week fill-in.

Available in 51% of leagues.

Other running backs worthy of a one-week trial: Glen Coffee, Michael Bush/Justin Fargas, and Lendale White

Nate Washington, WR, Tennessee Titans

Last Game: 7 rec, 66 yds, 1 TD

With the Titans ground game being routinely keyed-up on, the passing game has seen extra work during Tennessee’s 0-4 start. That means extra work for Washinton.

With a touchdown in three straight games, Washington is no longer just a sleeper, and holds tremendous Flex value going forward. Grab him before the well runs dry and hope he can get a fourth consecutive touchdown for your wide receiver-dry squad.

Available in 67% of leagues.

Sidney Rice, WR, Minnesota Vikings

Last Game: 5 rec, 70 yds, 1 TD

Favre and the passing game are booming with confidence, and it’s rubbing off on Rice. With a touchdown and 55+ yards in two straight games, it’s clear the chemstry is building, and Rice deserves a shot on your roster if you’re in need of receiver help.

It also doesn’t hurt that a hot Minnesota passing offense is facing the 0-4 St. Louis Rams.

Available in 81% of leagues.

Other receivers worth the risk: Mark Bradley, Donnie Avery, and Kevin Curtis

Denver Defense

Last Game: 74 rush yards allowed, 1 INT, 10 Points Allowed

Make that four straight games with no more than 10 points allowed, and only two touchdowns given up all season.

The Broncos defense is for real, as they have compiled 15 sacks, six interceptions, and four fumble recoveries in the first four weeks.

They have a tough test in the New England Patriots in week five, but if you’re in dire need of help at defense, they’re worth a shot.

Fantasy Start ‘Em or Sit ‘Em – Week 4

Posted on 03 October 2009 by Kevin

I’m tired of losing to the guy who lucked out with the first pick, grabbed Adrian Peterson, and then had enough sense to grab Peyton Manning, as well.

And then there I am, with the unflappable Drew Brees and a salivation inducing receiving corps of Randy Moss, Reggie Wayne, and, um, Julian Edelman?

My own advice of playin the little Kent State product back-fired, as Tom Brady had much more trouble with the Atlanta Falcons than anyone thought he would.

Starting Clinton Portis against a supposedly “guaranteed” mis-match with the Detroit Lions sure didn’t help, either.

Regardless, it’s opponents like this guy (you know the guy), that make me sick. It makes me think about how much I over analyze every single player, roster move, depth chart change, and NFL team’s drive.

But at that same time, it reminds me why I live and breathe for this sport. And why I will be 200% more committed than usual to kicking said opponent’s cigarette-smoking ass.

Here’s a look at this week’s suggested Starts, Sits, and a couple Sleepers to take a tiny nap on heading into week four.

Start

Jay Cutler, QB, Chicago Bears (vs. DET)

Cutler has shaken off his forgettable Chicago debut against Green Bay in week one. Since then, he’s done nothing but throw five touchdowns and nearly 500 yards. Next up? A game with the Lions, who let the inept Jaso Campbell notch 350 yards and two scores.

Cedric Benson, RB, Cincinnati Bengals (@CLE)

Benson has driven all the “fluke” talk to the ground, as he has ran for at least 76 yards and/or a touchdown in each of his first three games, with one of his games totaling 141. And considering this has all come against what is now a decent Denver defense, an improved Green Bay defense, and the defending champion Steelers, that’s pretty fricken cool. Yeah, the Browns should be afraid.

Terrell Owens, WR, Buffalo Bills (@MIA)

Yes, Mr. Popcorn was held without a catch for the first time since he was a rookie, but that will quickly be forgotten after he destroys the Dolphins. Trent Edwards has been shaky, true, but Miami is surrendering over 260 passing yards per game. Even Edwards (199 ypg) should be excited.

Chris Cooley, TE, Washington Redskins (vs. TB)

After recording seven receptions and at least 68 yards (and one touchdown) in his first two games, Cooley laid an egg against the Lions, of all teams, with just three catches for 38 yards. Blame Jason Campbell, and bank on Cooley lighting up the Buccaneers awful defense is week four. Because while the Redskins definitely have problems on offense, Tampa Bay simply cannot stop anybody.

Sit

Tony Romo, QB, Dallas Cowboys (@DEN)

Romo tore up the previously mentioned Buccaneers in week one, and has since thrown one touchdown and three interceptions. Considering how woeful Tampa Bay is this season, that means Romo hasn’t done a damn thing worth mentioning. Don’t expect that to magically change on the road against a Denver defense that has allowed just one touchdown all season, and a combined 16 points.

Ryan Grant, RB, Green Bay Packers (@MN)

Grant owns a mediocre 3.7 yards per carry, hasn’t topped 100 rushing yards this season, and goes up against the “Williams Wall” on the road against Minnesota. Oh, and it’s in front of the nation. Prepare to get embarrassed, Mr. Grant. And so, too, will you, if you go against your better judgment and run with the Packers so-so running game.

Wes Welker, WR, New England Patriots (vs.BAL)

Seems like a no-brainer, right? Not exactly. Welker was hurting before his week one match-up with the Bills, but still managed to haul-in 12 passes for over 90 yards. However, with this being week three one the “My status will screw your receiving corps” list, he’s a tough sell, either way you look at it. Throw in the fact that he’s going up against the Ravens defense and call it a day. We love you, Wes, just not that much.

John Carlson, TE, Seattle Seahawks (@IND)

Carlson re-established his awesome chemistry with the bad-back baldy, Matt Hasselbeck in week one, catching six passes for 95 yards and two scores. That’s fantastic, but with Hasselbeck out with another back owy,Carlson hasn’t seen more than 50 yards or a score. Don’t expect that to change on the road against Indianpolis.

Sleepers

Tashard Choice, RB, Dallas Cowboys (@DEN)

Marion Barber is almost certain to play in week four after begging, down on both knees, to play under the lights last Monday night. Still, Choice was impressive against Carolina, and with Felix Jones hurting, could be an interesting Flex this week, and could possibly see his value rise going forward.

Mark Bradley, WR, Kansas City Chiefs (vs. NYG)

Dwayne Bowe is almost certainly going to be slowed by his hamstring issues, if not miss his second consecutive game, entirely. While the Giants are far from easy to pass on, Matt Cassel is likely to be playing from behind all day, making Bradley the only Chiefs player truly worth talking about at the water cooler.

Fantasy Player Breakdown

Posted on 02 October 2009 by Kevin

Sunday Games

Detroit Lions @ Chicago Bears

QB Matthew Stafford: Could help you out in a jam if you had Chad Pennington or Marc Bulger, but belongs on your bench.
RB Kevin Smith: Looks “iffy” to play, and isn’t a safe bet going against solid defense.
WR Calvin Johnson: Is always a good play as Stafford’s only elite option.
WR Bryant Johnson: Scored last week, but isn’t consistent enough to strike fear into Bears secondary.

QB Jay Cutler: Has five touchdowns and only one pick in last two games. Safe bet for 300+ yards and multiple scores.
RB Matt Forte: Hasn’t done much, but could finally put up elite numbers against generally soft Lions defense.
WR Devin Hester: A good bet to get behind secondary and could score.
TE Greg Olsen: Could connect with Cutler early as their chemistry is getting better.

Cincinnati Bengals @ Cleveland Browns

QB Carson Palmer: Browns aren’t giving up a ton through the air, but if Benson can get going, Palmer should have solid numbers.
RB Cedric Benson: Shouldn’t have an trouble against a defensive line that has allowed over 100 yards rushing in every contest.
WR Chad Ochocinco: After averaging 90 yards in the first two weeks, Ochocinco dropped to 54 yards. Expect him to jump back up and pose as a consistent WR3.
WR Laveranues Coles: Is an after thought in an offense that has yet to appear very explosive.

QB Derek Anderson: The accuracy definitely isn’t there, but Anderson likes the deep ball and the Bengals aren’t immune to it.
RB Jerome Harrison: Jamal Lewis is still nicked up, and Harrison was impressive against Baltimore.
RB James Davis: Is only a threat on third downs, but could still see some decent action if Lewis sits again.
WR Braylon Edwards: Has a real chance at posting big numbers with his boy DA back in the saddle.

Oakland Raiders @ Houston Texans

QB Jamarcus Russell: If the running game gets going he has a chance to be OK, but don’t expect much.
RB Darren McFadden: Fumbled three times last week, but Houston’s run defense is atrocious. Awesome potential.
RB Michael Bush: Could get some solid goal-line opportunities against that horrible Houston run D.
TE Zach Miller: Is Oakland’s only consistent receiver, and arguably Russell’s favorite target.

QB Matt Schaub: Has been completely on fire since week one, so it’s hard to sit him, even if Oakland’s defense is solid.
RB Steve Slaton: Really hasn’t got it going yet, and can’t promise he will against Oakland.
WR Andre Johnson: Oakland corners can be tough, but can you really stop this guy right now?
WR Kevin Walter: Can make big plays and was big last week in his season debut. Makes a fine WR3 play this week.
TE Owen Daniels: The entire offense is clicking, so Daniels is a top ten play at his position.

Seattle Seahawks @ Indianapolis Colts

QB Seneca Wallace: Should make the start, but monitor Matt Hasselbeck’s situation. If Dwight Freeney is out as expected, Wallace could post decent numbers.
RB Julius Jones: Has had two stellar games, with the last coming against Chicago. Should be able to get loose a few times for a good day.
WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh: Merely a possession receiver and isn’t making plays. Marginal value without Hasselbeck in the line-up.
WR Nate Burleson: Has been on fire lately, and it shouldn’t stop, as he’s Seattle’s best receiver right now.
TE John Carlson: Isn’t the same without Hasselbeck in the line-up. Find a different alternative if the baldy sits again.

QB Peyton Manning: Has 300 yards in every game this season. A must-start.
RB Joseph Addai: Splitting carries with Brown, but still a quality Flex play.
RB Donald Brown: Not quite as valuable as Addai right now, but can surprise you.
WR Reggie Wayne: Had one off game but has been unstoppable in the other two contests. Don’t bet on Seattle containing him.
WR Pierre Garcon: Has two scores in his last two games as number two receiver. Tons of potential here for a break-out game.
TE Dallas Clark: Manning’s favorite target after Wayne. Expect solid numbers.

Tennessee Titans @ Jacksonville Jaguars

QB Kerry Collins: Jacksonville secondary is horrible, and even Collins could light it up.
RB Chris Johnson: With White helping him again, Johnson could see easier chunks of yardage.
RB Lendale White: Might starting stealing scores from CJ again, and is a viable Flex.
WR Justin Gauge: Not an elite number one by any means, but can pose as a decent WR3.
WR Nate Washington: Has been getting targeted a good amount and scored last week.
WR Kenny Britt: The rookie had four catches last week and could repeat against vulnerable secondary.

QB David Garrard: Titans run defense is great, so Garrard could be busy all day.
RB Maurice Jones-Drew: Should get a lot of work, but success could be limited.
WR Torry Holt: Now the number two, but should be active against weak secondary.
WR Mike Sims-Walker: New number one has 12 catches through three games, and should get a ton of targets against Titans.
TE Mercedes Lewis: Not a great bet, but could get some looks this week.

New York Giants @ Kansas City Chiefs

QB Eli Manning: Shouldn’t have any trouble, but be weary of another short day.
RB Brandon Jacobs: No worries against a soft KC defense, but like Manning, could have a short day.
RB Ahmad Bradshaw: Topped 100 yards last week in mop-up duty. Don’t be shocked if it happens again.
WR Steve Smith: Hasn’t caught less than six passes all season, and should be active early.
WR Mario Manningham: Watch out if Hakeem Nicks returns, but Manningham should still be good for 4-5 catches.

QB Matt Cassel: Should fare better than Byron Leftwich did last week, but don’t expect much.
RB Larry Johnson: He’ll get carries early, but they’ll probably be playing from behind before half-time.
RB Jamaal Charles: May get some looks on third down, but nothing guaranteed.
WR Mark Bradley: The top guy with Dwayne Bowe most likely out, could have a big day as Chiefs are likely to be playing catch-up.

Baltimore Ravens @ New England Patriots

QB Joe Flacco: Should be able to have success against average NE secondary if the running game can help out.
RB Ray Rice: Will get some yards, but not a good bet to score in back-to-back weeks.
RB Willis McGahee: Opposite of Rice, as he’s not a great bet for a ton of yards, but should score.
WR Derrick Mason: The wily veteran should be able to get open and do some damage.
WR Mark Clayton: Best bet is a big play, and not much else.

QB Tom Brady: Ravens haven’t locked down the passing game yet this season, so there’s room for production there.
RB Fred Taylor: Is he the back that finally has success against Baltimore’s rush defense? Unlikely.
WR Randy Moss: Will be very active and could get some deep balls on Baltimore’s average secondary.
WR Wes Welker: Still iffy to play, but would be very active underneath if he’s a go.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers @ Washington Redskins

QB Josh Johnson: Not a safe bet to do a whole lot better than Leftwich or even finish the game.
RB Carnell Williams: Bucs only consistent offensive threat, but he’s battling a knee issue.
WR Antonio Bryant: Came back from injury and was held without a catch last week. Could “break-out” with a decent line against ‘Skins.
TE Kellen Winslow: Could pose as Johnson’s safety blanket and could potentially be very active.

QB Jason Cambell: Put up nice numbers against Lions, and there’s no reason to think he can’t expose Tampa Bay’s horrible defense.
RB Clinton Portis: Has calf and ankle issues, but on paper could be poised for huge day.
WR Santana Moss: Destroyed Detroit last week, and could very well do the same here.
TE Chris Cooley: Had a down game and should be back to usual, productive self.

Buffalo Bills @ Miami Dolphins

QB Trent Edwards: Has been very passive, but Miami’s secondary can definitely be had.
RB Fred Jackson: Still should get enough carries to produce as an elite Flex option.
RB Marshawn Lynch: Risky play. Will he be eased in or is it going to be a fair split?
WR Lee Evans: Could nab a few deep balls against awful secondary if Edwards grows a pair.
WR Terrell Owens: Expect a big game after being held catchless for the first time since 1997.

QB Chad Henne: Wasn’t spectacular last week, and can’t be too hopeful against decent Buffalo defense.
RB Ronnie Brown: Should be active all day as Miami tries to ease the pressure off of Henne.
RB Ricky Williams: Won’t get a full split of carries, but is still a solid Flex play.
WR Ted Ginn Jr.: Is very inconsistent and has Henne starting, but should be heavily targeted.

Dallas Cowboys @ Denver Broncos

QB Tony Romo: Hasn’t done much since destroying Tampa Bay, and Denver defense isn’t giving up much.
RB Tashard Choice: Should get the majority of the carries if Barber plays, and could have a big workload if he’s out.
RB Marion Barber: Uncertain whether he’ll play, but won’t get starter carries even if he does.
WR Roy Williams: Hasn’t done anything since week one. He’ll only go as far as Romo will take him.
WR Jason Witten: Romo loves him so plenty of targets can be expected.

QB Kyle Orton: Is establishing a good connection with Brandon Marshall, so there’s hope there.
RB Knowshon Moreno: Has been solid and scored his first touchdown last week, and Dallas can be run on.
RB Correll Buckhalter: Had a great game last week and gets plenty of touches. Solid Flex option.
WR Brandon Marshall: Had a mini-break-out game last week and figures to be on his way to being an elite option again.

St. Louis Rams @ San Francisco 49ers

QB Kyle Boller: Figures to get the start for the injured Bulger, but the match-up doesn’t look good.
RB Steven Jackson: Adrian Peterson had mild success against them, so Jackson could be busy.
WR Donnie Avery: Has been battling injuries and has been inconsistent, but could find a big play or two.
TE Randy McMichael: Saw Daniel Fells steal two touchdowns, so value is uncertain.

QB Shaun Hill: Doesn’t figure to throw a ton, but could hook-up with Vernon Davis again if needed.
RB Glen Coffee: Should be very busy with Frank Gore out, especially against Rams weak run defense.
WR Josh Morgan: Is 49ers only consistent receiver, and that’s not saying much.
TE Vernon Davis: Scored twice last week and is finding bigger role in the offense. Could be in for another solid day.

San Diego Chargers @ Pittsburgh Steelers

QB Philip Rivers: Steelers can definitely be passed on with Troy Polamalu out, so he’s a good play.
RB Darren Sproles: LT is unlikely to play, so Sproles should get plenty of opportunities.
RB LaDainian Tomlinson: Slight chance he plays, but wouldn’t get enough touches to make him an elite option.
WR Vincent Jackson: Has been huge lately, and will likely find a few deep passes his way.
TE Antonio Gates: Hasn’t scored yet, and this could be his break-out game.

QB Ben Roethlisberger: Could be active in what seems to be a possible shoot-out.
RB Willie Parker: Stepped it up last week and finally scored, and should be very active.
WR Santonio Holmes: Always good for a couple of big plays, so solid value here.
WR Hines Ward: Still a favorite of Big Ben’s, so a decent WR3, as usual.
TE Heath Miller: Hasn’t been producing through three weeks, but history says he’s due.

New York Jets @ New Orleans

QB Mark Sanchez: Sanchez could go toe-to-toe with Brees in a loss, but the number potential is there.
RB Thomas Jones: They’ll try to get Jones going early, but if the Saints take a lead, you could be stuck with only 5-10 carries.
RB Leon Washington: He’s been getting his touches, but simply hasn’t produced. The Superdome could be the perfect setting for an offensive display.
WR Jerricho Cotchery: Has been Sanchez’s favorite target, and it shouldn’t stop here.
TE Dustin Keller: Has dropped off a bit recently, but could be in for a lot of targets in potentially high-scoring game.

QB Drew Brees: Delivered a yawner last week, almost certainly to produce solid numbers, even against solid defense.
RB Pierre Thomas: If they can get the running game going, he could be huge again.
RB Reggie Bush: Has been a virtual disappointment at every level in the fantasy realm this season.
WR Marques Colston: With Lance Moore still out, is definitely Brees’s favorite target, but not without a tough match-up.
WR Devery Henderson: With Colston garnering the attention of Jets’ top corner, Henderson could find a few deep balls.

Monday Night Football

Green Bay Packers @ Minnesota Vikings

QB Aaron Rodgers: Not a great match-up, as Jared Allen could wreak havoc on their banged-up offensive line.
RB Ryan Grant: Won’t have much room to run against the formidable Williams Wall.
WR Greg Jennings: Could be good for a big play or two, but Antoine Winfield should have him covered most of the night.
WR Donald Driver: Has been getting good looks with Jennings double-covered. Usually shows up on Monday night.

QB Brett Favre: He should benefit immensely from Adrian Peterson carving up the Packers poor run defense. Could have a field day with play-action.
RB Adrian Peterson: AD will literally go “all day” against the Packers weak run defense which has allowed both Cedric Benson and Steven Jackson over 115 yards rushing each.
WR Bernard Berrian: Could finally get a deep pass against vulnerable secondary.
WR Percy Harvin: Favre likes him, and Green Bay could have trouble containing him.
