Tim Tebow on Jaguar’s Radar

Posted on 14 December 2009 by Kevin

Tim Tebow isn’t in the National Championship, so for all intents and purposes, his lobbying to be a first round selection has already begun.

However, I’m not so sure how much lobbying he’ll really have to do. There have been reports that the Jaguars are fully committing themselves to Tebow, in an effort to give their franchise a new, fresh identity, despite already having one in running back Maurice Jones-Drew.

The rumor of Jacksonville being interested (very interested) a few months back, is seemingly getting more and more serious with each passing day, as a report from ProFootballTalk.com suggests that there is already some type of structure in the 2010 NFL Draft that will guarantee the Jaguars get the Florida prospect.

While many draft experts are down-playing Tebow as an NFL franchise savior, and are instead suggesting he switch positions, the Jaguars seem more hell bent on saving their team and gaining a hometown discount (of sorts), in an effort to increase ticket sales.

There isn’t any explanation about what would happen with head coach Jack Del Rio, or even what the team’s plans are regarding current starting quarterback David Garrard, but assumption is becoming quite obvious: Tim Tebow has the face, the legacy, and the talent, and he’s going to be on the field.

This doesn’t mean the Jaguars are forfeiting any success they have this season to go all Mike Ditka-like on Tebow and pull all the strings to land him like Ditka landed Ricky Williams several years back, but it’s also fairly evident (as far as rumors go, anyway), that they wouldn’t necessarily let anything get in their way either.

The real question is quickly becoming, “How will Tebow fit, and will he be successful?”, rather than if he will be drafted, or where he will be drafted.

Tebow may have been in the news lately for crying after his team’s loss to number one ranked Alabama, but as the rumors pile in, he may end up crying again in just a few months, but this time out of joy.

Preseason Power Rankings

Posted on 23 May 2009 by Chris

With the new season approaching fast, putting together power rankings is a bit harder than one would think. The top few teams and bottom few are pretty easy, but the middle 20 or so teams are the toughest.

There are several things before the season starts that could change these rankings, but I see them being pretty solid unless there is a HUGE deal made before September (such as a deal for Julius Peppers or Anquan Boldin).

Here they are, all 32, surprises and all:

1

New England PatriotsWith the return of Tom Brady, the Patriots are going to be the team to beat this year. Couple that with the offseason moves that they made, and they deserve to be #1.

2

Pittsburgh SteelersI normally wouldn’t but the Super Bowl winners at #2, but like I said before, the Patriots are the team to beat, period!

3

Tennessee TitansThe Titans were great last season, and have made a few moves to try to get better so that they can make a deeper run in the playoffs. They will be very tough to beat again this year.

4

New Orleans SaintsThe Saints have a stellar offense, but last year proved that you can’t just outscore everyone to succeed. You need a defense to make a difference, and the Saints have made some moves to improve on defense, and we will quickly see if they deserve to be this high.

5

Indianapolis ColtsDespite losing their offensive coordinator and offensive line coach, the Colts will succeed, but Marvin Harrison will be missed, and it will be interesting to see how long it takes Manning and Co to get into sync without him.

6

Philadelphia EaglesThe Eagles have been quite active in the offseason, and the moves made have been quality moves that will help them win, and win now.

7

Atlanta FalconsThe Falcons have a ton of potential, and signing Tony Gonzalez was a brilliant move to help Matt Ryan grow over the next few seasons.

8

Baltimore RavensLike the Falcons, the Joe Flacco led Ravens have loads of potential, and could challenge the Steelers for the divisional championship.

9

Minnesota VikingsBrad Childress should just give up his dream of coaching Brett Favre, and just work with what he has. Minnesota will be the team to beat in the NFC North without Favre, with him, they may win one or two extra games.

10

Seattle SeahawksWhere the Patriots succeeded without their star quarterback, the Seahawks struggled. Of course struggled could be an understatement since they went 4-12. With Hasselbeck back and healthy, the Seahawks expect to contend for the divisional championship.

11

San Diego ChargersI have read that the Chargers are underrated, but they are a very streaky team, so I don’t think they are worthy of a higher ranking… until they prove that this years streak is a winning one.

12

Carolina PanthersThe Panthers have the talent, but are in a very competitive division, and their fate is totally in their hands. Can they beat the Falcons, Saints, and Bucs? Yes, but will they? That is to be seen.

13

Houston TexansFor the past few seasons every analyst covering the NFL has picked the Texans to be a playoff team. This year is no different, but in the AFC South, that will be hard to accomplish until the Colts are no longer the dominant team in the division, meaning that the Texans could miss the playoffs again this year. (But next year is looking good).

14

New York GiantsThe Giants are two years removed from winning the Super Bowl, but have lost a few key players, though they apparently don’t need them. They suffer the same way the Panthers do in a tough division. Their future is entirely up to them.

15

Arizona CardinalsEven though they made it to the Super Bowl last season they have a few unhappy players, but have made a few additions to strengthen their team. They will play well, but will finish second in the NFC West.

16

Dallas CowboysThe Cowboys will be playing in a brand new, state of the art, billion dollar stadium this year, but that won’t help them win. They will need to come together as a team in order to make the playoffs. They have a good cause to rally around (the accident with their practice facility that paralyzed one of their coaches), now let’s see if that brings them together, or tears them apart.

17

Washington RedskinsThe Redskins have a lot of apologizing to do to Quarterback Jason Campbell. After word leaked that the ‘Skins were trying to land Jay Cutler, they attempted to make a trade to move up for Mark Sanchez in the draft. Unless Campbell is happy, this will be the highest the Redskins will be this year.

18

Buffalo BillsThe addition of Terrell Owens gives the Bills receiver to take some focus off of Lee Evans giving the Bills one of the best WR tandems in the NFL, until TO decides that he hates playing in Buffalo.

19

Miami DolphinsMiami was a surprise last year. They probably even surprised themselves going 11-5, but that won’t happen this year. They will be lucky to be a .500 team this year.

20

Chicago BearsCutler is a step up from Orton and Grossman, but without any real receivers to throw to, he isn’t going to do much better than Orton and Grossman.

21

Tampa Bay BuccaneersThe Buccaneers imploded at the end of last season, and there have been some major changes to the team. Some good, some questionable, and with five quarterback’s on the roster, who knows what is going to happen in Tampa this year.

22

Denver BroncosEven though Cutler is better than Kyle Orton, the Broncos are better off without Cutler who was terribly unhappy, and would have become a cancer in the locker room. They HAVE to play better on defense or they won’t stay this high for long.

23

Jacksonville JaguarsJacksonville lost 2 WR’s, but added Torrey Holt in hopes of returning their offense to the form it was in 2 year ago when they made the playoffs. They can do that, but David Garrard HAS to step up and play well, and avoid the mistakes he made last year.

24

Green Bay PackersGreen Bay struggled mightily last year after making it to the NFC Championship the year before. They have addressed several weaknesses on defense, and hope that those changes pay off.

25

New York JetsI hated seeing Brett Favre in a Jets uniform, not because I don’t like Favre, but because it meant that the Jets all but sold their soul at a shot at the Super Bowl. They had Chad Pennington, and the talent to succeed, but getting rid of Pennington to get Favre was only a one year solution to a non-existant problem. Now with Favre retired (for the time being) they have several unproven players at quarterback in what should be a strong division this year, and drawing the NFC South could make for a long season for Jets fans.

26

Kansas City ChiefsKansas City is in the second year of rebuilding, but adding Matt Cassell, Mike Vrabel, and Zach Thomas will go a long way in making them competitive in the AFC West.

27

Cleveland BrownsWith a new coach, and possibly a new starting QB, the Browns have tons of upside, but trading a valuable target (TE Winslow) could come back to bite them later in the season.

28

Cincinnati BengalsThe Bengals get Carson Palmer (and second year LB Keith Rivers) back, and like the Patriots and Seahawks, they have to be excited at the possibilities. So why, with their star QB coming back are they #28? They were terrible last year, and losing TJ Houshmanzada will hurt, especially with Chad Ochocinco’s antics the past few years.

29

San Francisco 49ersThe 9ers played well at the end of the year last year, but didn’t make any huge changes to carry that over into this season.

30

St Louis RamsThe last few teams have nowhere to go but up, and with the improvements made during the offseason, the Rams hope that they move up quickly.

31

Oakland RaidersWith the talent Oakland has they should move up, but with Al Davis calling the shots they could be basement dwellers until he steps down.

32

Detroit Lions0-16. Need I say more.

So, what do you think?

2009 NFL Draft: Live Updates Round 1

Posted on 25 April 2009 by Peabo

1st) With the first overall pick, the Lions will choose MATTHEW STAFFORD, QB, GEORGIA. Stafford has already agreed to a 4 year, $41.7 million dollar deal (in guarantees) and could be worth as much as 6 year/$78 million dollars.

With our first pick easily being right, lets see if we get our second pick right with the St. Louis Rams selecting Jason Smith, OT, Baylor. Also keep an eye on Eugene Monroe, OT, Virginia.

2nd) With the second pick of the 2009 NFL Draft, the St. Louis Rams select JASON SMITH, OT, BAYLOR. With the void Orlando Pace left by being released it is a perfect fit for the Rams.

So pick number two in our Mock Draft is right, but now with Kansas city on the clock it is our first pick which could go wrong. We have Aaron Curry, OLB, Wake Forest going. Also look for Tyson Jackson to go at this spot if it isn’t Aaron Curry.

3rd) With the third pick of the 2009 NFL Draft the Kansas City Chiefs select, TYSON JACKSON, DE, LSU. With their only pick in the first two rounds the Kansas City Chiefs take the DE. Scott Pioli may be trying to recreate drafting Richard Seymour when he was in New England.

With our third pick being wrong look for the Seattle Seahawks to select Aaron Curry, instead of Sanchez with this pick.

4th) With the fourth pick of the 2009 NFL Draft, the Seattle Seahawks select AARON CURRY, OLB, WAKE FOREST. This pick to combine with Lofa Tatupu and Leroy Hill this is an elite line backing core.

Even though our last two picks have been wrong, I can still see Brian Orakpo going to the Cleveland Browns. Also keep an eye on Michael Crabtree, WR, Texas Tech. Or even a team trying to trade up and get Matt Sanchez.

TRADE The Jets are now on the clock. Look for them to take Matt Sanchez, or maybe Michael Crabtree. My money is on Matt Sanchez.

5th) With the fifth pick of the NFL Draft the New York Jets select MARK SANCHEZ, QB USC. With Kellen Clemons as the starter an upgrade was in dire need. Good pick.

Details of the trade the Browns get DE Kenyon Coleman,S Abram Elam, QB Brett Ratliff, and the 17th and 57th overall pick in this years draft.

So now the Bengals are on the Clock. According to our mock draft look for Andre Smith, OT , Alabama to be the pick. Also look at Eugene Monroe, OT, Virginia.

6th) With the sixth pick of the 2009 NFL Draft the Cincinnati Bengals select ANDRE SMITH, OT ALABAMA. They need him to keep Carson Palmer healthy and help support the running game.

With the Oakland Raiders on the clock look for Michael Crabtree to go here. If it isn’t him the Raiders could take the Jeremy Maclin, WR, Missouri, because Al Davis Covets speed and this kid has speed. Also Eugene Monroe could fit here too. But I see them taking Crabtree.

7th) With the seventh pick of the 2009 NFL Draft the Oakland Raiders select DARRIUS HEYWARD-BEY, WR, MARYLAND. Like I said Al Davis covets speed and Darrius Heyward-Bey was the fastest person at the combine not to mention his size at 6′1 and 5/8ths. Typical Al Davis move.

Jacksonville is now in a prime position to trade down a bit because teams are going to want to trade up and grab Crabtree. They could stay put and take Crabtree, or take the OT Eugene Monroe. But also BJ Raji is a very good prospect at this point for Jacksonville. Keep an eye on Raji.

8th) With the eight pick of the 2009 NFL Draft the Jacksonville Jaguars select, EUGENE MONROE, OT, VIRGINIA. They need to keep David Garrard on his feet, and also they need to protect their small running back Maurice Jones-Drew.

The Green Bay Packers are on the clock and I think it is time that Bj Raji goes. But I do really like Malcolm Jenkins going here. Or even Brian Orakpo.

9th) With the ninth pick of the NFL DRAFT the Green Bay Packers Select, BJ RAJI, DT, BOSTON COLLEGE . Green Bay needs to sure up their nose tackle and Raji is the best DT in this years draft.

With San Francisco on the clock I could see Michael Crabtree going here. But with Mike Singletary as the new head coach they could go defense here and take Brian Orakpo. Or even the next best OT Michael Oher. And the dark horse could be Josh Freeman the third best QB coming out in this years draft.

10th) With the tenth pick of the 2009 NFL DRAFT the San Francisco 49′ers select MICHAEL CRABTREE, WR, TEXAS TECH. The best WR in this years draft falls down to them at 10. Easy decision for the new 49′ers.

Buffalo is now on the clock and they really need to take the next OT. Michael Oher, but since Brian Orakpo has fallen this far, they could take him as well, lets see what happens.

11th) With the 11th overall pick of the 2009 NFL Draft the Buffalo Bills select, AARON MAYBIN, DE, PENN STATE. Aaron Maybin has great upside and I think it is a great pick for Buffalo. He is either a boom or bust type of player, but I like him here.

Denver is now on clock and in our mock we have them taking Tyson Jackson who went 3rd overall. So again I think Orakpo could go here because Denver really needs to rebuild their defense. Or maybe its time for one of the USC linebackers to go.

12th) With the 12th pick of the NFL Draft the Denver Broncos take KNOWSHAWN MORENO, RB, GEORGIA. I really don’t understand this pick, their defense has a lot of needs. But I guess he is their guy and they did get a good football player.

13th)With the 13th pick of the NFL Draft the Washington Redskins select BRIAN ORAPKO, DE, TEXAS. He fell a long way into their laps and he is a great fit for Washington. They can move him around from DE or to OLB.

With New Orleans on the Clock it is time that Malcolm Jenkins to come off the board he really fits the team and it is a great value. The saits could also take Chris “Beanie” Wells, or maybe Brian Cushing, LB, USC. I think it will be the CB in the end.

14th) With the 14th pick of the NFL Draft the New Orleans Saints select, MALCOLM JENKINS, DB, OHIO STATE. He is the DB they have been looking for, he can play CB or FS. This is a great value pick for them.

Houston Texans need another linebacker to go along side DeMeco Ryans. Look for Clay Mathews or Brian Cushing to go here to the Texans. They also could go for a running back in Chris “Beanie” Wells.

15th) With the 15th overall pick of the 2009 NFL Draft the Houston Texas select BRIAN CUSHING, LB, USC. Since they drafted Mario Williams they have been trying to make this an amazing defense to stop the Colts potent offense. This is a solid choice.

At 16 the San Diego Chargers are in a prime postion to grab the next best WR to pair with Vincent Jackson. The two guys that jump out are Jeremy Maclin and Percy Harvin. Also Look for Beanie Wells to potentially go off the board. The dark horse could be someone to compliment Shaun Merriman like USC linebackers Rey Maualuga or Clay Matthews.

16th) With the 16th pick of the 2009 NFL Draft the San Diego Chargers select LARRY ENGLISH, DE/OLB, NORTHERN ILLINOIS. English is a good prospect and fits the Chargers scheme really well. This is their guy and they believe in him and that is why they took him so high.

The Browns are now on the clock at 17th where they traded down to from number 5. They are in a position to upgrade their defense with one of the USC linebackers, also if Braylon Edwards is on the trading block they could go wide receiver so look at Jeremy Maclin, and Percy Harvin. I could see them taking Beanie Wells here too, but defense is a huge need.

The Browns trade down again! Tampa Bay is now on the clock. Look for Tampa to snatch up Josh Freeman or the next WR Jeremy Maclin, or Percy Harvin, also I could see some defensive players being in the mix, Rey Maualuga, or the CB Vontae Davis.

17th) With the 17th pick in the 2009 NFL Draft the Tampa Bay Bucs select, JOSH FREEMAN, QB, KANSAS STATE. Gruden is out but they still collect quarterbacks. Freeman isn’t ready to play right now but they have Leftwich to start, and Freeman can sit and learn for a year and then step in and be the franchise guy.

Denver Broncos are on the clock and I think they will select Robert Ayers. Keep an eye on Everette Brown.

18th) With the 18th pick of the 2009 NFL Draft the Denver Broncos select, ROBERT AYERS, DE, TENNESSEE. Extremely versatile player, and one of my favorite players in this draft. Denver gets a steal at 18.

Now Cleveland is again on the clock will they try and trade down again? They have to pick sometime. Again look at what I said before so maybe they get the WR they want at a cheaper price.

TRADE Cleveland trades down two more spots and the Eagles are now on the clock. Look at the TE Brandon Pettigrew, or maybe the running back Beanie Wells.

19th) With the 19th pick the Philadelphia Eagles select, JEREMY MACLIN, WR, MISSOURI. Donovan McNabb has a new toy. This is something he wanted, and when he was benched last season the Eagles are trying to make it up to him now. Good pick, because the Eagles have another playmaker.

20th) With the 20th pick of the 2009 NFL Draft the Detroit Lions select, BRANDON PETTIGREW, TE, OKLAHOMA STATE. They needed an OT, Michael Oher is who I thought they would take, but they pair the best TE with the best QB, so it is a good pick for them to help give Stafford a security blanket.

Cleveland is back on the clock. Who knows what they are going to do…

21st) With the 21st pick of the 2009 NFL Draft the Cleveland Browns select, ALEX MACK, C, CALIFORNIA. They need to beef up their offensive line so they get Mack the center who is versatile and can play any position on the line.

Minnesota is now on the clock look for the play maker Percy Harvin to go off the board here. Maybe Michael Oher.

22nd) With the 22nd pick of the 2009 NFL Draft the Minnesota Vikings select, PERCY HARVIN, WR, FLORIDA. They needed a playmaker and they could line him up beside Peterson in the wildcat… That would be scary!

New England is now on the clock and if they don’t pick Rey Maualuga, I will be very very surprised. He is their kind of player and to go along side Jerod Mayo that would be a scary young combination. Also don’t be surprised to hear a cornerback called, maybe Darrius Butler, or Vontae Davis.

TRADE Baltimore moved up, look for a linebacker Rey Maualuga or maybe a WR. Also maybe Michael Oher. Let’s see

23rd) With the 23rd overall selection of the 2009 NFL DRAFT, the Baltimore Ravens select, MICHAEL OHER, OT, OLE MISS. Michael Oher is a great prospect that has fallen further then he should have. But this pick helps sure up their line and they can keep Joe Flacco on his feet.

Atlanta is on the clock and they need to go Defense. Look at Peria Jerry or Evander “Ziggy” Hood, LB’s Rey Maualuga, Clay Mathews, or DE Everett Brown could come into play here.

24th) With the 24th overall pick the Atlanta Falcons select, PERIA JERRY, DT, OLE MISS. Atlanta needs defense and where better to start then up front with a DT. This is a good building move.

Miami is on the clock and they could go a number of ways. The Tuna is a defensive guy so look for Rey Maualuga, Clay Mathews, Vontae Davis, or Darius Butler. If they go offense Beanie Wells is on the board and that could give Miami a great 1, 2 punch or look at the WR on the board with Hakim Nicks, or Kenny Britt.

25th) With the 25th overall pick the Miami Dolphins select, VONTAE DAVIS, CB, ILLINOIS. Miami needs a corner and Davis is one of the best in the draft he just has a lot of off the field issues. Bill Parcels doesn’t mind character guys, hopefully south beach doesn’t get to Davis.

New England is back on the clock and the players I mentioned earlier are still on the board. Lets see what they do.

TRADE New England trade the 26th Pick to the Green Bay Packers.

26th) With the 26th pick in the 2009 NFL DRAFT the Green Bay Packers select, CLAY MATTHEWS, LB, USC. Green Bay is transitioning to the 3-4 so they need players to fit that scheme and Matthews is an extremely athletic player.

Finally the Indianapolis Colts are on the clock, the Colts are my team so I am excited to see what they do. The four players I would like to see go here in order of preference is 1) RB Beanie Wells, to give them a 1, 2 punch. 2) WR Brian Robiskie, 3) DT Evander “Ziggy” Hood, 4) LB James Laurinaitis

27th) With the 27th overall pick in the NFL Draft the Indianapolis Colts select DONALD BROWN, RB, CONNECTICUT. Ok, I like this pick alot, Brown is a smart kid, and a good runner. I’ll take it. 1, 2 punch!!!

The Bills are on the clock, they need to go OT. Let’s see.

28th) With the 28th pick of the NFL DRAFT the Buffalo Bills select, ERICK WOOD, C, LOUISVILLE. They needed a tackle to fill a hole and they brought in a center. Wood can play ever position on the line, so we will see how it works out.

The Giants are on the clock and they need a WR. Let’s see if Hakim Nicks or Kenny Britt comes off the board.

29th) With the 29th overall pick the New York Giants select, HAKEEM NICKS, WR, NORTH CAROLINA. They lost Plaxico Burress, so he is his replacement.

The Tennessee Titans are now on the clock and according to our board Darius Butler will come off the board now. But they could also go WR, and take Brian Robiskie. Also Rey Maualuga, or James Laurinaitis. Also the last of the top 3 DT’s could go so look for Ziggy Hood.

30th) With the 30th pick of the 2009 NFL Draft the Tennessee Titans select, KENNY BRITT, WR, RUTGERS. They need a playmaker at WR it is their biggest need, and they filled it with this pick. I say it is a good choice.

There is no doubt in my mind that the Arizona Cardinals take Chris “Beanie” Wells right here and right now. But if they were to go in a different direction they love Darius Butler out of Connecticut.

31st) With the 31st pick of the 2009 NFL Draft the Arizona Cardinals select, CHRIS “BEANIE” WELLS, RB, OHIO STATE. The Cardinals were awful running the ball last year, so now they have Wells to run the ball along with Hightower.

The Pittsburgh Steelers don’t need a lot, and in our mock we have them taking a corner lets see.

32nd) With the 32nd overall pick in the 2009 NFL DRAFT the Superbowl champions select, EVANDER “ZIGGY” HOOD, DT, MISSOURI. Great value to the already dominant Steelers team.

2009 Mock Draft v3

Posted on 24 April 2009 by Peabo

Pick Number

Team

Selection

1

Detroit Lions

Matthew Stafford, QB, Georgia

Detroit has a lot of needs, but their main concern should be protecting their quarterback, so that their offense can start to grow. That said, they have been in serious negotiations with Stafford the past few days, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see an announcement today that they have signed him.
Other Needs: All Positions

2

St Louis Rams

Jason Smith, OT, Baylor

With the recent loss of Orlando Pace the Rams have to look at replacing him, and with the talent available this year at OT, this is a no-brainer.

Other Needs: QB, WR, LB, CB, S

3

Kansas City Chiefs

Aaron Curry, LB, Wake Forest

Kansas City has made a lot of moves this off-season, and with the signings of Zach Thomas, and Mike Vrabel, they need someone who can learn from them to step in when they retire.

Other Needs: OL, DL

4

Seattle Seahawks

Mark Sanchez, QB, USC

The injury to Matt Hasselbeck last year proved that without him, the Seahawks will struggle, and Sanchez gives them a backup QB and, the heir-apparent.

Other Needs: DE, LB

5

Cleveland Browns

Brian Orakpo, DE, Texas

With Shaun Rogers plugging up the middle, the Browns need an edge rusher, and that is where Orakpo steps in.

Other Needs: WR, OL

6

Cincinnati Bengals

Andre Smith, OT, Alabama

Cincinatti has one of the better QB’s in the league, but if he isn’t healthy, the Bengals struggle (see Seahawks above). Their problem is with protecting their QB, not finding a suitable backup. With Smith, they should be well on their way to keep Palmer on his feet.

Other Needs: RB, WR, LB, CB

7

Oakland Raiders

Michael Crabtree, WR, Texas Tech

Oakland is slowly making progress on offense with the recent additions of JaMarcus Russell and Darren McFadden, and with Crabtree, they should be a little closer to respectability.

Other Needs: OL, DL, LB

8

Jacksonville Jaguars

BJ Raji, DT, Boston College

BJ Raji would add an impact player to the Jags defense that struggled at times last year.
Other Needs: QB, RB, DL

9

Green Bay Packers

Malcolm Jenkins, CB/S, Ohio State

A lot has been said lately about how the Packers defense struggled last season after making it to the NFC Championship in 2007. With Jenkins, they add youth to the experience they have already in the secondary.

Other Needs: OL, LB

10

San Francisco 49ers

Aaron Maybin, DE, Penn State

With the top two quarterbacks off the board, San Francisco will take Maybin to give them a pass rusher who is ready to start immediately.
Other Needs: OL, WR, DL, LB, CB

11

Buffalo Bills

Everette Brown, DE, Florida State

The Bills would love to have someone on the other side of Aaron Schobel, and Everette Brown is just the player to fill that spot.

Other Needs: OL, TE

12

Denver Broncos

Tyson Jackson, DE, LSU

Jackson would add a great player to the terrible defense that the Broncos fielded last year, allowing them to at least make an attempt to stop the other team.

Other Needs: QB, DL, LB, S

13

Washington Redskins

Josh Freeman, QB, Kansas State

The closer we get to the draft the more disgruntled Jason Campbell seems to get.
Other Needs: OL

14

New Orleans Saints

Brian Cushing, LB, USC

The Saints have had a very potent offense for the past few years, and now their defense needs to catch up. Adding Cushing to play alongside Vilma will begin to legitimize their defense.

Other Needs: CB, S

15

Houston Texans

Clay Matthews, LB, USC

Houston plays in a very tough division, and needs another LB to play beside Demeco Ryans.

Other Needs: DT, CB, S

16

San Diego Chargers

Jeremy Maclin, WR, Missouri

Vincent Jackson is a star in the making, but the Chargers need another WR to pull attention away from Jackson, and someone like Maclin fills that hole.

Other Needs: OL, DE, S

17

New York Jets

Percy Harvin, WR, Florida

has said that he is happy with the current QB situation, but they need another WR to line up across from Cotchery, and Harvin gives whoever plays QB another good target.

Other Needs: QB, RB

18

Denver Broncos

Robert Ayers, DE, Tennessee

The Broncos defense desperately needs a legitimate pass rush, and with BJ Raji joining the team earlier, Ayers gives them a great rusher off the edge.

Other Needs: QB, DL, LB, S

19

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Darrius Heyward-Bey, WR, Maryland

Tampa has several holes, and WR is one place that they have never had loads of talent. Taking Heyward-Bey in the first round could put them well on the way to a division championship.
Other Needs: QB, WR, LB, CB

20

Detroit Lions

Eugene Monroe, OT, Virginia

With Smith taken first overall, the Lions can now get their QB of the future, and Freeman is the best left.

Other Needs: All positions.

21

Philadelphia Eagles

Knowshawn Moreno, RB, Georgia

The Eagles made a few moves in the off-season to bolster their team, and with Moreno, they have Westbrook’s backup, and future replacement.

Other Needs: TE, DL, LB, S

22

Minnesota Vikings

Michael Oher, OT, Ole Miss

Minnesota has the makings of a good team, and are coming off a division championship, but they have a few holes, and could use some depth. Orr gives them some depth at OT, behind a few aging stars.

Other Needs: QB, DL, S

23

New England Patriots

Rey Maualuga, LB, USC

New England needs to get younger on defense, and drafting Maualuga give the Patriots Bruschi’s eventual replacement.

Other Needs: OL, DL, OLB, CB, S

24

Atlanta Falcons

Evander “Ziggy” Hood, DT, Missouri

Since the Falcons signed Gonzalez, they should grab a good DT to beef up their line.
Other Needs: DL, LB, CB, S

25

Miami Dolphins

Vontae Davis, CB, Illinois

Miami had a lot of success last year, but could use another corner to round out their defense. Also, someone like Bill Parcells isn’t afraid of taking someone with suspected character flaws.
Other Needs: OL, LB, S

26

Baltimore Ravens

James Laurinaitis, LB, Ohio State

With the loss of Terrell Suggs, the Ravens need another aggressive LB to line up beside Ray Lewis, and Laurinaitis could fill that void well.

Other Needs: OL, DL, CB

27

Indianapolis Colts

Chris “Beanie” Wells, RB, Ohio State

Last year Joseph Addai did well, but he proved that he isn’t able to carry the full load by himself, and adding Wells to the mix the Colts could have a very potent running game to take some of the pressure off of Manning and the passing game.

Other Needs: OL, DL, WR, S

28

Buffalo Bills

Brandon Pettigrew, TE, Oklahoma State

With Atlanta having traded for Gonzalez, that leaves Pettigrew for the Bills to take, giving Trent Edwards one more option, and their best TE in several years.
Other Needs: OL, TE

29

New York Giants

Brian Robiskie, WR, Rutgers

Losing Plaxico Burress will hurt the Giants, but adding Robiskie will be a step in the right direction to replace him.

Other Needs: DL, LB, CB, S

30

Tennessee Titans

Darius Butler, CB, Connecticut

One of the biggest holes in Tennessee is at CB, and Butler is just the kind of player that the Titans would love to have lining up in the secondary.

Other Needs: OL, DL, CB

31

Arizona Cardinals

Donald Brown, RB, Connecticut

Brown could give the Cardinals the flexibility to release Edgerrin James.

Other Needs: OL, DL, LB

32

Pittsburgh Steelers

Alphonso Smith, CB, Wake Forest

The Steelers have lost a few players to free agency, leaving a few holes, but Smith should be able to step in almost immediately at CB and help out.
Other Needs: C, DL, LB

Posted on 23 April 2009 by Peabo

For the most up to date Mock Draft, check this out.

Pick Number

Team

Selection

1

Detroit Lions

Jason Smith, OT, Baylor

Detroit has a lot of needs, but their main concern should be protecting their quarterback, so that their offense can start to grow.

Other Needs: All Positions

2

St Louis Rams

Eugene Monroe, OT, Virginia

With the recent loss of Orlando Pace the Rams have to look at replacing him, and with the talent available this year at OT, this is a no-brainer.

Other Needs: QB, WR, LB, CB, S

3

Kansas City Chiefs

Aaron Curry, LB, Wake Forest

Kansas City has made a lot of moves this off-season, and with the signings of Zach Thomas, and Mike Vrabel, they need someone who can learn from them to step in when they retire.

Other Needs: OL, DL

4

Seattle Seahawks

Matthew Stafford, QB, Georgia

The injury to Matt Hasselbeck last year proved that without him, the Seahawks will struggle, and Stafford gives them a backup QB and, the heir-apparent.

Other Needs: DE, LB

5

Cleveland Browns

Brian Orakpo, DE, Texas

With Shaun Rogers plugging up the middle, the Browns need an edge rusher, and that is where Orakpo steps in.

Other Needs: WR, OL

6

Cincinnati Bengals

Andre Smith, OT, Alabama

Cincinatti has one of the better QB’s in the league, but if he isn’t healthy, the Bengals struggle (see Seahawks above). Their problem is with protecting their QB, not finding a suitable backup. With Smith, they should be well on their way to keep Palmer on his feet.

Other Needs: RB, WR, LB, CB

7

Oakland Raiders

Michael Crabtree,WR, Texas Tech

Oakland is slowly making progress on offense with the recent additions of JaMarcus Russell and Darren McFadden, and with Crabtree, they should be a little closer to respectability.

Other Needs: OL, DL, LB

8

Jacksonville Jaguars

Mark Sanchez, QB, USC

With the addition of Torry Holt, the Jaguars can now bring in some competition for David Garrard, who struggled last year.
Other Needs: QB, RB, DL

9

Green Bay Packers

Malcolm Jenkins, CB/S, Ohio State

A lot has been said lately about how the Packers defense struggled last season after making it to the NFC Championship in 2007. With Jenkins, they add youth to the experience they have already in the secondary.

Other Needs: OL, LB

10

San Francisco 49ers

Aaron Maybin, DE, Penn State

With the top two quarterbacks off the board, San Francisco will take Maybin to give them a pass rusher who is ready to start immediately.
Other Needs: OL, WR, DL, LB, CB

11

Buffalo Bills

Everette Brown, DE, Florida State

The Bills would love to have someone on the other side of Aaron Schobel, and Everette Brown is just the player to fill that spot.

Other Needs: OL, TE

12

Denver Broncos

BJ Raji, DT, Boston College

BJ Raji would add an impact player to the terrible defense that the Broncos fielded last year, allowing them to at least make an attempt to stop the other team.

Other Needs: QB, DL, LB, S

13

Washington Redskins

Tyson Jackson, DE, LSU

With the Jason Taylor experiment now over, the Redskins add an explosive DE to generate a good pass rush.

Other Needs: OL

14

New Orleans Saints

Brian Cushing, LB, USC

The Saints have had a very potent offense for the past few years, and now their defense needs to catch up. Adding Cushing to play alongside Vilma will begin to legitimize their defense.

Other Needs: CB, S

15

Houston Texans

Clay Matthews, LB, USC

Houston plays in a very tough division, and needs another LB to play beside Demeco Ryans.

Other Needs: DT, CB, S

16

San Diego Chargers

Jeremy Maclin, WR, Missouri

Vincent Jackson is a star in the making, but the Chargers need another WR to pull attention away from Jackson, and someone like Maclin fills that hole.

Other Needs: OL, DE, S

17

New York Jets

Percy Harvin, WR, Florida

has said that he is happy with the current QB situation, but they need another WR to line up across from Cotchery, and Harvin gives whoever plays QB another good target.

Other Needs: QB, RB

18

Denver Broncos

Robert Ayers, DE, Tennessee

The Broncos defense desperately needs a legitimate pass rush, and with BJ Raji joining the team earlier, Ayers gives them a great rusher off the edge.

Other Needs: QB, DL, LB, S

19

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Darrius Heyward-Bey, WR, Maryland

Tampa has several holes, and WR is one place that they have never had loads of talent. Taking Heyward-Bey in the first round could put them well on the way to a division championship.
Other Needs: QB, WR, LB, CB

20

Detroit Lions

Josh Freeman, QB, Kansas State

With Smith taken first overall, the Lions can now get their QB of the future, and Freeman is the best left.

Other Needs: All positions.

21

Philadelphia Eagles

Knowshawn Moreno, RB, Georgia

The Eagles made a few moves in the off-season to bolster their team, and with Moreno, they have Westbrook’s backup, and future replacement.

Other Needs: TE, DL, LB, S

22

Minnesota Vikings

Michael Oher, OT, Ole Miss

Minnesota has the makings of a good team, and are coming off a division championship, but they have a few holes, and could use some depth. Orr gives them some depth at OT, behind a few aging stars.

Other Needs: QB, DL, S

23

New England Patriots

Rey Maualuga, LB, USC

New England needs to get younger on defense, and drafting Maualuga give the Patriots Bruschi’s eventual replacement.

Other Needs: OL, DL, OLB, CB, S

24

Atlanta Falcons

Brandon Pettigrew, TE, Oklahoma State

Atlanta has been wooing Tony Gonzalez as of late, but if they were smart, they would just wait and grab Pettigrew.

Other Needs: DL, LB, CB, S

25

Miami Dolphins

Vontae Davis, CB, Illinois

Miami had a lot of success last year, but could use another corner to round out their defense. Also, someone like Bill Parcells isn’t afraid of taking someone with suspected character flaws.
Other Needs: OL, LB, S

26

Baltimore Ravens

James Laurinaitis, LB, Ohio State

With the loss of Terrell Suggs, the Ravens need another aggressive LB to line up beside Ray Lewis, and Laurinaitis could fill that void well.

Other Needs: OL, DL, CB

27

Indianapolis Colts

Chris “Beanie” Wells, RB, Ohio State

Last year Joseph Addai did well, but he proved that he isn’t able to carry the full load by himself, and adding Wells to the mix the Colts could have a very potent running game to take some of the pressure off of Manning and the passing game.

Other Needs: OL, DL, WR, S

28

Buffalo Bills

Eben Britton, OT, Arizona

Having taken Brown earlier, the Bills can now grab an OT to keep Edwards on his feet.

Other Needs: OL, TE

29

New York Giants

Brian Robiskie, WR, Rutgers

Losing Plaxico Burress will hurt the Giants, but adding Robiskie will be a step in the right direction to replace him.

Other Needs: DL, LB, CB, S

One of the biggest holes in Tennessee is at CB, and Butler is just the kind of player that the Titans would love to have lining up in the secondary.

Other Needs: C, DL, LB

Mocking Mock Drafts

Posted on 07 April 2009 by Justin

While I love draft chatter, I really don’t like mock drafts – especially in the printed publications.  There are are a number of reasons that mock drafts are often like watching monkeys select stocks to buy …

  1. Team culture – in scanning NFL teams, there are a variety of draft methodologies.  Teams will draft the best player available, to replace an aging veteran, to prepare for the departure of future free agent, a scout or GM falling in love with a player, and more.  Rarely, however, to teams draft for specific “right now” slots.
  2. Trades – There are too many unpredictable trades that go down on draft day.
  3. Lies – Most teams are excellent at masking who they really want to pick (for an interesting study, note how much the teams that show their hand have a history of sucking).  Did ANYONE predict that the Titans would select Chris Johnson last year?

With all of the above in mind, I thought it would be interesting to do a different kind of mock draft.  This is pretty simple. This is not a prediction on who I think a team will draft.  It isn’t even a prediction on what player will go in what slot.  It is just me playing GM and saying who I would draft.  It will be fun to go back and see how close I was.  But even saying that makes it sound too much like a mock draft!

Here are the first 10 selections:

  1. Lions – Aaron Curry.  While the trend of first round QB busts has greatly improved (thanks to Rivers, Roethlisberger, E. Manning, Ryan, and Flacco), I just don’t see Stafford as the man.  In addition, the Lions’ brain-trust (Mayhew and Schwartz in particular) are defensive-minded types.  Curry gives them an instant play-maker – at pretty much any LB position.  He is the type of player you can build a defense around – similar to what the Bears did when they drafted Urlacher.
  2. Rams – Michael Crabtree. Outside of the money, a WR has the least amount of risk to the total impact on a team. If they are a bust, you move on.  However, if they hit it big, then the pay-off can be huge.  I believe that Crabtree is in the Fitzgerald mold – a true game changer.    He also brings some spark and name recognition to a team with ownership issues.
  3. Chiefs – Knowshon Moreno. What does a new offensive-minded coach need for a team that lacks mental toughness?  A do-everything running back with a don’t-quit mentality.  Moreno will do for the Chiefs what Peterson did for the Vikings – give them an identity.  They need receiver and o-line help but this is a deep draft at both.
  4. Seattle – Matt Stafford. Although as fiery as ever, Hasselbeck’s body is simply wearing down.  Seneca Wallace is more of a Wildcat QB.  Enter Stafford.  His arm strength isn’t a question.  Neither is his moxie.  What’s missing right now is a strong football IQ – and who better to groom him than Hasselbeck?
  5. Browns – Brian Orakpo. This is my first true “need” pick.  To put it another way, the Browns are desperate for a consistent pass rush.  Orakpo is relentless, versatile, and has big-game experience.
  6. Cincinnati – Jason Smith. Another pure need pick.  The Bengals have gone from having one of the deepest o-lines in the NFL, to having the cupboard go bare in a hurry.  Smith could immediately start at LT, allowing them to move (or cut) Levi Jones.  Note:  I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Bengals draft their starting RT later on in rounds 2 or 3.
  7. Oakland – Connor Barwin. For years, the Raiders have lacked an identity on defense.  In recent years, they have had issues putting pressure on the QB.  In my opinion, Barwin is the sleeper of the draft – think Jared Allen. He is the perfect Raider player – intense, a tremendous athlete, and a bit of a project.
  8. Jacksonville – Michael Oher. Oher is as raw as sushi, but a tremendous athlete.  From a PR perspective, the Jaguars need a good story as well.  By drafting Oher they get a LT with immediate starting potential; plus Jacksonville is close enough to his Ole Miss and Nashville support system to create some stability for him.
  9. Green Bay – Malcolm Jenkins. The Packers are starting to have depth issues at all secondary positions.  Jenkins gives them either an immediate starter (allowing them to move Woodson to FS) or at least a nickle back to groom.
  10. San Francisco – Jeremy Maclin. The 49ers are extremely predictable on the offensive side of the ball.  Part of this has been inconsistent QB play, but a lot of it is simply just a lack of playmakers.  Maclin may be the most versatile player in the draft.  He can immediately play the slot position (catching and running), plus add instant explosiveness in the return game.

Picks 11 – 20 to follow later …
